Get ready for aerial combat on an epic scale–Aeronautica Imperialis is coming sometime “soon”, according to a flak-filled trailer.

In the Warhammer Fest Announcements over the weekend, GW snuck in a teaser for Aeronautica Imperialis, their game of aerial combat that was a proto-X-wing kind of game, played at the same model scale as Epic (so 6mm) over the skies of worlds throughout the galaxy. Originally released in 2006, the game brought to life the aerial battles of the grim darkness of the distant future, fleshing out the air forces (and space forces) of fighters and bombers and the like as the different factions in 40K envisioned them. And now, 13 years later, it seems poised to return.

Now you really don’t get a ton of information from the trailer, other than confirmation that this is in fact Aeronautica Imperialis. Details like when it’s coming back, and what it’s going to be coming back as are left up to the viewers. Will it be a standalone game? It was mentioned alongside the other specialist games, so perhaps it’s going to be back as it once was, and it’ll be a game of aerial maneuvers and dogfights. It’s not unreasonable to think that GW would want something to compete with X-Wing, and this is a good candidate for it.

But it could also be an expansion for Adeptus Titanicus–that’s the part of the Seminar it followed. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to think it’s an expansion. After all, the scale wouldn’t be out of place, and it’s Forge World’s big push right now. And it’d be a good direction to expand Adeptus Titanicus, instead of just releasing new upgrade sprues and Titan variants. Maybe it’s the start of a seed for a return of Epic.

Whatever form it takes, be sure to watch the skies. We’ll keep you up to date with more news. But in the meantime…

Let’s turn it over to you. What do you think Aeronautica is going to be? Let us know in the comments!
