FFG: Star Wars Outer Rim – Solo Play Previews
In a game where you play as bounty hunters, mercs, and smugglers, you know there is going to be action. But what happens, when you’re the only smuggler in the sector? FFG’s got an answer for that.
Star Wars: Outer Rim is a new board game coming from Fantasy Flight Games that explores the seedier elements of Star Wars. Life on the Outer Rim is lawless and tough – but if you can make a name for yourself, you can retire with a nice nest-egg and be the most infamous person in the galaxy!
Meet the AI
In today’s preview, FFG goes over the Solo Play in the game in greater detail. This mode of play lets you try to take on the galaxy, make some money and come out on top – even when all your real world friends are nowhere to be seen.
The key to Solo Play is the AI player deck. This deck is kept to the side of the AI’s NPC board. These cards are shuffled and one is drawn each turn. They have widely varying behavior. Sometimes the AI will have a small number of actions, while other times they may make multiple moves in a turn towards their ever changing goals.
Here you see the AI deck placed to the right of an NPC board. To keep track of the AI player, goal tokens are used. These mark the various locations and objectives on the board the AI is trying to to either reach or achieve. These tokens are used to determine the most efficient paths for its movement and other actions as the AI player is proceeding around the board.
To keep things simple, many of the advanced card abilities are not used by the AI player to avoid complexities. Overall from turn to turn, the AI player will mimic the behavior of a human player, making sure you have fun game, even if you’re the only Smuggler in town.
