Aeronautica Imperialis takes to the skies this weekend, but today get your hands on a How to Play video that’ll make you an Ace in no time.

Aeronautica Imperialis takes players to the skies above the battlefields of the 41st Millennium, where they’ll battle with Adeptus Titanicus-scaled planes to take down enemy fighters and achieve dominance on a hex-grid map. And launching alongside of them is the new website to help keep track of everything you need to play the game, including a new how to play tutorial that looks a little something like this:

Positioning seems to be of the utmost importance here–as you’ll see, every turn is broken up into different phases, where you’ll do things like choose maneuvers and then actually fly around and shoot each other. Positioning comes into play here because if you’re caught with an enemy on your tail in the Tailing Fire phase, which comes before anyone actually gets to move, you get shot.

In order to be tailing someone, you have to meet a few very specific criteria:

But if you are, then you get to attack twice in a turn, as you shoot in the tailing fire phase (and players take it in alternating activation according to initiative) and then again in the firing phase, if you’re able to keep targets in your firing arcs. Of course, just because you’re in someone’s rear arc doesn’t mean you’re safe. Planes like Fightabommaz have a tail gunner, and it seems like they also get to fire during the tailing fire phase.

Movement takes place on the hex grid, with players resolving their maneuvers picked during the ‘pick maneuvers’ phase and activating in initiative order. During the movement phase, you can change your speed, the direction of your flight (according to your maneuver), and then change your altitude. After that, it all comes down to the shooting. Sadly there don’t seem to be rules for ramming into each other–fighters freely move through each other’s spaces. Even Orks.

You can find out more information about the game, as well as get a look at the minis inside the box and where you can secure your own copy on the new Aeronautica Imperialis website. So check it out.
