Coming this November is a brand new Sisters of Battle Army Set from Games Workshop. This new Army Set format is looking pretty cool!

Well, it’s finally happening! The Sister of Battle have a release date set: November 2019! Games Workshop promised that the sisters were going to get a 2019 release and now it’s official. It’s taken almost two years of time but after lots of Codex testing, re-testing and community betas the Sisters are about to make landfall. Sure, it’s still a couple months out but November will be here before you know it. That said, it’s not just the Army we’re looking forward to, the new format of the Army Box also seems pretty good, too.

Looking closely at this box, at the bottom of the box you can see a hit at what’s coming:

“Contains Codex: Adepta Sororitas and 25 Citadel Miniatures”

As for the miniatures, we know the Canonnes is included for sure. What else will GW pack in the box? We’ll have to wait to find out – although you can probably bet on Battle Sisters, probably Seraphim, and probably a Penitent Engine. But what really stuck out to us was the fact that the box also includes a codex and not just any codex but a limited edition codex!

Personally, I think that’s pretty cool! You’d get a starter set of miniatures for the army and the book – perfect right? And typically GW does discount the army boxes so I would expect this to be a better deal than just purchasing each of those model sets individually (even if we have no info about the actual pricing or MSRP yet). But this box contains a Codex. That’s going to toss a wrench in somethings. Now folks have a pretty good reason not to buy multiple copies of this box – why pay for the codex multiple times?

This means that this Army Box set isn’t a typical Starter Box set from GW. If you were planning on launching a new Sisters of Battle Army with this box you still can! Just don’t plan on buying a bunch of copies of this box to help fill out your army because you’re going to end up with a stack of extra codexes you won’t need.

Stack of codexes you don’t need? Where have we seen that before…

My hope is that GW releases this box alongside another version without the limited edition codex. Those Start Collecting! boxes are almost universally the best starting points for new armies (or expanding existing ones with allies). I’m sure that in time we’ll see a Start Collecting Sisters of Battle box set as well. That said, I also can appreciate the new Army Set because it includes a codex. It feels like a more complete package for the customer and future player.

For future army releases, I’m also wondering if this will be a new ‘thing’ GW does for those armies. New Start Collecting type army deals with the Codex included, perhaps even the limited edition version. They already do packages on their website, this would essentially be the same thing but with a fancy box to match.

Example: Start Collecting! Thousand Sons Collection

So again I wonder is this going to be something that GW does moving forward? And, again, I think about it with a word of warning for those who are interested: If you’re going to buy the box just get one because you don’t need multiple copies of the codex.

Congratulations Sisters of Battle players and new converts – your patience will be be rewarded in November!
