The Rumormill is spinning up with more details about the re-launch of Aeronautica Imperialis. Are you ready to Dogfight in the Grimdark?

Talk about Aeronautica Imperialis is making the rounds. The classic game from Forge World is coming back after a 12 year hiatus. Launched in 2006 with an expansion in 2007, the game was supported by Forge World. We’re not sure what happened as it seemed that just as the game was getting it’s legs under it, support dried up. This new version looks to take some of the same core and re-worked it for a modern version. Anyhow, on to the rumors!

Our sources tell us the following:

  • AI coming very soon
  • Starter Set – Imperial vs Ork (confirmed)
  • Four Expansion Boosters launching at the same time – 2 Imperial, 2 Orks
  • Price Point – around 50-60£
  • Cards, Dice, booklets, etc.
  • Expansion Races to follow every quarter

Thoughts

As far as the rumors go, we already saw a bunch of the AI stuff on display at Gencon as well as the announcement from GW. Those Expansions for the Imperials and Orks are probably just the ships you can purchase seperately. As far as the price point, that seems pretty standard for a GW game with these types of components. Not a big shocker there. What’s really interesting is the future plans we’ve heard about for follow-up Expansions every quarter. Personally, I’d rather see more factions/ships at a faster rate a la Warcry, but I understand that this is also a re-done model line as well and that takes time.

What new factions/expansions could they introduce? Well, looking back at the orginial AI, there were planes for Space Marines, Eldar, Tau and Chaos. If GW is planning on a new expansion/factions every quarter those four do seem like likey canidates.

Aeronautica looks like it’s played on a specific sized board with hexes – this is a great way for it to differenticate it from X-Wing. While these games might look similiar at a very high level, collecting, painting, and playing these games are going to feel different. X-Wing is all pre-painted and uses movement templates where as AI has more of a hobby aspect to it and appears to use those hexes for movement. Also, AI uses D6s vs X-Wing’s Custom dice. These two games might seem like they occupy the same air-space, but upon closer inspection, I think they are flying in different circles.

NOVA is coming soon, that might be a great time for GW to announce any new info – like a release date and price point. Hopefully, we’ll get more concrete news by then. But for now, I guess we’re all in a holding pattern.

Anyone else excited to see what GW does with Aeronautica Imperialis? What factions do you want to see in the game?
