The Black Templars have a Chapter Tactic and Special Characters – but are they getting a Codex Supplement? It doesn’t look like it. So where are they?

One of the major players in the Third War For Armageddon was the Black Templars. It’s kind of where the chapter was introduced to the Warhammer 40k community and 3rd edition saw the Black Templars become the poster-boys for 40k for a brief time period.

They even got a campaign codex alongside the Salamanders:

Over the years they have gotten their own codex a few times and have gotten their rules updated. Currently, they have some rules via PDF. So they are technically playable – but some folks are wondering if they are going to get the Supplemental treatment or not.

Signs Point To…

Let’s take a look at some of the evidence we have.

  • The Space Marine Book doesn’t have their characters
  • They have PDF rules

We also got a leaked picture of the Imperial Fist characters and it sure looks like the Black Templars aren’t going to join their fellow Sons of Dorn:

I see Lysander, Pedro, and the new guy Tor Garadon – no Emperor’s Champion, Helbrecht, or Grimaldus…

“Oh maybe they are on a different page?” Sure – that’s a possibility…but then why is Pedro Kantor, Chapter Master of the Crimson Fists, on this page? Is he now an Imperial Fist Character?!

And then there is the rumor floating around about a new Black Templar vs Ork Boxed set. Could it be a part of the Psychic Awakening? Well the Black Templars are notoriously anti-psyker, so there is that. Maybe it could be Armageddon Redux? Perhaps GW will make a mini-dex for the Black Templars and whatever Orks are in the box. But if it’s like Tooth and Claw or Wake The Dead, those are limited runs so the rules wouldn’t be widely available after the box launch.

Like this – but with Orks and Black Templars instead?

I don’t know what Games Workshop has planned at this point for the Black Templars. Best case, they get a new solo codex. Worst case, they stick around in their PDF updated form. A mini-dex would be a nice “middle of the road” option…if that BT vs Ork box rumor does pan out. But even then, are we going to see any of their characters go the Primaris route? I doubt it at this point. If we’re lucky, the Emperor’s Champ gets a new model. Or GW will make-up a new character. Who knows at this point?!

So, again I ask: Where are the Black Templars?

What do you think? Are the Black Templars relegated to the purgatory of PDFs or do you think a new ‘Dex is in their future?
