Games Workshop just dropped a huge clue as who the enemy of the T’au will be in Psychic Awakening: Greater Good – Or is it someone else?

Psychic Awakening: Greater Good is pitting the T’au vs some unknown foe. Or FOES for that matter. All we can say for certain is that things are not looking good for the T’au and their fifth expansion if you’re going based on the most recent bit of lore from Warhammer Community. In Beyond The Startide Nexus by Dirk Wehner, we catch a glimpse of an apparent fate that has befallen Commander Shadowsun…at least, that’s what it appears to be.

‘This is O’Shaserra speaking. I hope this message arrives in time for you to be warned. In time for you to act. We successfully traversed the Startide Nexus and established contact with our lost brothers and sisters of the Fourth Sphere. As suspected, they had suffered a failure of their AL-38 Slipstream modules but… we don’t understand exactly what happened yet. For your reference, I have attached the recordings of their surveillance drones. Most of the material was far too corrupted to gain useful information. The segments that were not… well, see for yourselves.’

The message goes on to say that while the Fifth Sphere Fleet made contact with the remaining Forth Sphere Fleet, things did NOT go well. They ran into some resistance in the form of…the Death Guard!

Our enemy seems to be of Gue’la nature, but nothing like we have encountered before.’ The face of the famous T’au Commander looked haunted for a moment. ‘They call themselves the Death Guard, and we have learned that they do so rightfully.’

Things go from bad to worse as the message continues. It turns out that Commander Shadowsun has sent the recording back via a Drone as their fleet prepares for a last, desperate battle. Commander Shadowsun has opted to hold the line and perhaps buy some time for the T’au on the other side of the Startide Nexus to prepare a counter attack.

‘Thus,’ Commander Shadowsun spoke on, ‘I have come to a decision. We cannot stop the Death Guard this side of the Startide Nexus. After dozens of battles, our fleets are too damaged. Our strength has depleted to a point that we cannot halt this incursion any longer, if we still want to secure the expansion of the Nem’yar Atoll. We are now forced to choose, and we choose the latter. We are trusting in you, our comrades beyond the Nexus, to counteract the Death Guard threat.’

But before she can finish the message, a battle erupts with the T’au Fleet engaging the Death Guard once more. But here’s where things get…weird. In the story, based on the timestamp from the drone the enemy fleet should have made the jump already. So either Shadowsun was able to defeat the enemy fleet – which, based on the story, sounded highly unlikely OR something else stopped the Death Guard.

I’m hoping for Chaos T’au personally…

The Great Enemy

The ending is left intentionally vague. But that’s exactly the point of the story. You have the T’au who are relative newcomers to “warp” tech and it’s tough to get right. They still don’t fully understand some of the things they have encountered but that’s what so interesting about their expansions anyhow. But let’s back up a bit and talk about a few options for their opponent in The Greater Good.

Obviously, we have a Death Guard sighting. That certainly fits! We also have mention of other Daemons and Nurgle entities – which could be a hint that Chaos Daemons could be a part of this battle, too. It’s kind of fitting that the Psychically blank T’au face off against the warp infused Daemons. Whatever the case, it’s very clear that this was a deliberate clue in that direction.

However, I would also like to point out this image of Shadowsun. It’s from the New Year Open Day teaser. Take a good look at Shadowsun’s section. Now take a look above Shadowsun:

That’s very clearly a Genestealer. So what does that mean? Well it could just be a cool photo. But why would GW stage the NEW Shadowsun model in a battle vs forces including a Genestealer? We know the T’au aren’t fighing Tyranids in the because they just got new rules in Blood of Baal. So what gives? Well, Genestealer Cult are still on the table, too.

Are we about to see a T’au vs Death Guard vs Genestealer Cult triple threat throwdown? It’s quite possible! I guess we are all just going to have to wait and find out…

So what do you think? Who’s fighting the T’au? Death Guard? Genestealers? Chaos T’au?! Let us know in the comments!
