The world of Warhammer 40,000 might be grim, dark, and full only of war, but that makes fantastic fodder for video games. Here are five of our favorites.

In the grim darkness of the 41st Millennia, there are some pretty sweet video games. And because they’re not constrained by just what you can see on the tabletop, these games give us an expanded look into the world of Warhammer 40K, showing us what life is like as a space marine, leader of a squad of space marines, commander of a company of space marines, or captain/admiral of a whole fleet full of space marines.

Today we’re looking at five of our favorite 40K games, which we feel best gives us a chance to play in that grim, dark world.

Battlefleet Gothic Armada

Battlefleet Gothic Armada takes one of our favorite specialist games from 40K and gives it the real time adaptation it’s always needed. Take command of a fleet of ships from the Warhammer 40K world and crash them headlong into each other. This game, and its sequel, give us a great look at the conflict between Chaos and the Imperium, put you in command of spaceships, and feels like you’d expect capital ship combat in the 41st millennium to feel like.

Fire Warrior

This game casts you as a brave Fire Warrior, taking on threats way above your typical pay grade. But it also captures the feel of Warhammer 40K’s weapons pretty well. Wrecking shop with a bolter in this game feels like the way Bolters are described. It takes an interesting look at a different side of the galaxy, and though the PS2 graphics haven’t aged the best, it has a fond place in our memories.

Final Liberation

Speaking of older games though. Let’s talk about Final Liberation: Warhammer 40K Epic. This game is a full on adaptation of Epic, putting you in charge of massive armies. Powered by the Panzer General engine, it gives you some of the biggest armies in 40K, putting you in charge of Titans and tanks and other things, coupled with some deliciously old school FMV cut-scenes, reminiscent of Westwood’s Dune or Command & Conquer series that would come later.

Dawn of War

Of course, Final Liberation isn’t the only strategy game for 40K by a long shot, and you’d be hard pressed to find a better example than the Dawn of War games. They take 40K and give it that real time goodness that feels like you’re right in the midst of a chaotic battle unfolding across the battlefields of the distant future.

Space Marine

Finally, we have THQ’s Space Marine. This game captures the feel of marines as they exist in the fiction of 40K. And it’s awesome, there’s no other way to describe it. Poll gamers from across consoles and PCs and everyone has a soft spot for Space Marine in their catalogue of games. It’s easily one of the best 40K games out there no matter what you’re interested in.
