Age of Sigmar: Seraphon Rules Preview

Games Workshop just dropped some new rules for the Seraphon! Check out what’s coming for everyone’s favorite lizards.

With a new Battletome hitting pre-order this weekend, we’re getting a closer look at some of the new rules for the Seraphon along with some more hints at what’s in the book. No time to get cold-blooded now – let’s dive in!

When building a Seraphon army, you’ll start by choosing between the savage Coalesced and the mysterious Starborne, each of which offers you a suite of thematic and powerful battlefield benefits.

Right off the bat, this confirms what we suspected yesterday. The Seraphon will have to options to start with – the Starborne and The Coalesced. Starborne are closer inline with the way they Seraphon operate currently. They are “Extremely mobile” and can summon reinforcements. Expect Slann Starmasters slinging spells (and units) across the tabletop. Their signature ability is called “Lords of Space and Time” and it’s a powerful movement mechanic:

Furthermore, the Starborne are kinda out there – mentally, at least. They have another ability called Unfeeling that makes all their units bravery 10!

Basically, if you’re looking for an army close to what you’re playing already, the Starborne are that but with some new tricks. If you’re looking for something a tad different, then the new Coalesced might be for you.

“Coalesced armies represent the more savage, terrestrial Seraphon that have made their home in the Mortal Realms, and as such, they have gained several powerful advantages to their combat prowess.

On the tabletop this translates to some more bonuses to their attacks. In the case of Predatory Fighters, it’s literally bonus attacks:

It’s not just their offensive capabilities that have gotten a boost – it’s also their defensive ones, too. Scaly Skin is a great way to help deal with multi-damage attacks:

This is really going to help vs more elite armies that rely on 2-3 damage attacks to get the job done. And these two abilities are just the tip of this jungle.

“As if that wasn’t enough, you’ll get to ignore negative terrain effects in your table half, as well as Bravery modifiers!”

That’s really cool! I’d like to see the wording for that “ignoring negative terrain effects” rule because that could be really powerful! And folks, that’s STILL not all.

If you’re playing Starborne OR Coalesced, you’ll also get access to two more special rules:

Contemplations of the Ancient Ones is a universal rule for all Slann. Getting to swap out spells during the game makes them super versatile. The second rule is called Sacred Asterisms and they are a trio of potential benefits you can use during your games. GW has shown off one so far:

Oh – and there are also Sub-factions, too.

Every sub-faction has an ability, command trait and artefact, with some also having command abilities.

BOOM! Now, it appears that these sub-factions might be split among the Starborne and Coalesced. Here we have a few that GW showed off:

Dracothion’s Tail is one sub-faction and we also have a preview for one of the Fangs of Sotek rules for all you skink fans out there:

We have a third confirmed sub-faction with Koatl’s Claw – and we’ve got their relic and command trait to preview:

The last sub-faction previewed is Thunder Lizard – and this is the one that lets you field an army full of Stegadons! That preview is coming later this week.

Finally, we get a look at some of the Warscroll changes. Now, GW has said “Loads of Seraphon warscrolls have been tweaked for the new Battletome” but these were a few of the highlights that GW had to show off.

The Skink Oracle on Troglodon is now a fully-fledged wizard and has a new ability and spell to boot:

The Saurus Warriors have also gotten a boost to their Celestite Clubs with an additional Rend and will have more benefits for fighting in large groups:

Endless Spells?

So many players have noted that the Seraphon casters don’t have their own set of Endless Spells. That’s been kind of a bummer. Until we learned why. The Seraphon are getting special “Bound” versions of Endless Spells that work the same as their predatory version with one slight change: “bound predatory endless spells can only be moved by a player using a Seraphon army.

Yeah. Get ready for a whole new world of hurt from these spells.
