Psionics, Planar-related subclasses, spelljammers–Wizards of the Coast is cooking up something big for their fall book. Here’s what we know so far.

Alright folks, with another batch of Unearthed Arcana cooking up a nice vat of D&D rumors as to when/how we might be seeing the experimental rules that WotC’s been testing of late. When looking ahead, we ought to keep a few things in mind:

  • We know there’s a big book coming in November, following the usual WotC release schedule.
  • It’s usually a bia expansive book like Xanathar’s Guide to Everything and Eberron: Rising from the Last War.
  • WotC frequently shows off rules very close to what appears in the actual book through Unearthed Arcana (like the Oath of Heroism and College of Rhetoric in the upcoming Theros book)
  • Most of what we’re seeing is related to the planes, sidekicks, and/or psionics.

We know a new setting is coming–though a lot of folks believe this to be the upcoming Theros book. It’s hard to say where the Magic the Gathering settings fit in to the rest of WotC’s overarching plans. But it’s likely that whatever the big book in November is, it’ll be related to one of the new settings that WotC is working on.

That’s right, settings. Above is the video from PAX Unplugged where Chris Perkins discusses some of the current projects they have in the works as related to the upcoming D&D show D&D Presents, including two very interesting tidbits:

Levistus plays heavily in whatever the 2020 storyline book will be
Around 3:47:51 Mica Burton asks if she should play a regular tiefling or a Levistus tiefling, with the audience responding heavily in favor of the latter. This prompted Perkins to say “I can’t begin to tell you how well that’s going to work into the 2020 experience we’re going to have.” Levistus is an archdevil entombed in ice who rules a layer of the Nine Hells called Stygia.

Spelljammer…confirmed?
At 4:01:22 one of the audience asks: “I saw you were using the Dragonmark rules. Are you guys going to be using more content from Eberron and possibly going there?”
Perkins reply reveals some interesting setting details: “We will not be going to Eberron, but I’m pretty loose as a DM about pulling stuff in from other settings. Including stuff we haven’t even released yet, like, hey, I can throw some Spelljammer stuff into this campaign if I want to. And I will! So if a player wants to play with some Eberron material, Dragonmarks, whatever, I’m all for it.”

Now I don’t know if that means a Spelljammer setting book, or just Spelljammer rules (we’ve already seen them coming up in the background of products like Dungeon of the Mad Mage and Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes) in a more formalized setting like a vehicle covered in something like an updated Manual of the Planes for 5th Edition. Either way, we’ll probably start seeing details before too long, so keep your eyes out.
