Here’s a look at all the big D&D announcements made this week! Five new books confirmed, including Rime of the Frostmaiden and more!

Yesterday was Day 1 of D&D Live 2020, and it was full of announcements and streams that showed the length and breadth of what’s coming out for D&D later this year. As expected, there was a big new adventure announced, and we got a bevy of details about the new Avalanche storyline, which kicks off with Rime of the Frostmaiden.

Rime of the Frostmaiden is a horror adventure set in Icewind Dale, which is an interesting step for them. As WotC designers Chris Perkins and Jeremy Crawford explained during their announcement, this adventure is going to play up themes of Isolation and Winter and Secrecy as they explore the adventure. This is a campaign that’s set to embrace the setting and the environment, so players can expect to see a lot more wilderness interaction. One of the other big things Perkins mentions is that players will have their own secrets, and they can either lean into the paranoia that having a character secret causes, or choose to share it, and either style of play can foster an environment suitable for horror.

This is the next big adventure. Featuring more than 50 new stat blocks, environmental hazards, the goddess Auril, and a “goliath sport” the game promises to offer players a variety of different ways to take part in this adventure which can be run continuously or piecemeal. But that’s not the only thing awaiting you this year.

Also there’s a cookbook! The heroes’ feast cookbook promises to deliver 80 recipes of D&D Flavor. You might recognize some of the names attached to this, including D&D Historian Jon Peterson of Playing at the World, who has  been digging up a ton of D&D “food lore” so that you get recipes that are authentically flavored from books, old modules, and more.

Fans with more expensive tastes can dig into the new Beadle and Grimm’s Platinum edition of the adventure, which offers up a ton of different immersive props and options. So you’ll have handouts “high quality wearables” and more.

On top of that there’s a collectible dice set! This features everything we’ve come to expect from these sets–we’ve seen them for Avernus and Laeral Silverhand before: it’s dice, maps, and some cards with extra information on the various monsters.

Finally there was a big Baldur’s Gate 3 stream that showcased the new gameplay, you can watch the video here, and check back later for a more in-depth deep dive. Now, on to day 2!

Happy Adventuring!
