The Doctor will see you now…

GW is back up and running and they are rapid-firing Psychic Awakening books out the door. War of the Spider starring Fabius Bile arrives this weekend and let’s take a look at the first set of rules for everyone’s favorite Grimdark Mad Scientist – the man, the legend…Fabius Bile.

Right off the bat, will you look at this amazing new artwork.  Beautiful!

His 8th Edition Rules

Now a quick aside to look at his old stats in 8th Edition so we have a baseline. Here’s a look at all of his rules over the last few editions to giet you up to speed.

The New Rules

And we are off:

Stats – the Spider is a little weaker with 1 less Strength, and 2 less Attacks.

The Chirurgeon more than makes up for the lost attacks, bring Fabius up to 7 , at a nice -2AP.

Rod of Torment has the same net effect.

The Chirurgeon’s secondary effect is new and makes Fabius much harder to kill. The 5+FNP is new and very nice.

His little buddy is a characterful piece that gives Fabius more control when he upgrades a unit of his “New Men” each turn.  Speaking of the New Men…

Identical effects to 8th edition.

Thoughts

Overall Fabius is tougher than he was in 8th, and mid-game experiments/upgrades will be more reliable. The big question is will Fabius be able to make an entire army of these upgraded CSMs before the game like he could in previous editions, or is limited to piecemeal upgrades mid-game. GW says he has a custom army coming with more details soon, so I have my fingers crossed.

Fabius is one of the Grimdark’s best most characterful villians and should return to his proud earlier 3.5 Edition Codex days  of a full custom upgraded army. The conversion opportunities alone make it worthwhile. Finger’s crossed.
