Solasta, Crown of the Magister, the authentic 5th Edition game of dungeon crawling and tactics using the D&D rules, has an exciting new update.

We’ve been following Solasta, Crown of the Magister for a while now. It’s a more tactics-oriented adaptation of the 5th Edition D&D ruleset, bringing a faithful translation of 5th Edition combat rules to its game. If you’re looking for gameplay that feels exactly the way it does on the tabletop, Solasta is your best bet. And it’s looking that way more and more each day. The latest update from Solasta, Crown of the Magister’s devs highlights two of the latest wrinkles they’re working on: advantage/disadvantage and magic items with active powers. Let’s take a look.

One of the most requested features from folks who played the game’s Steam Summer Demo is a tooltip that tells you why you have advantage, disadvantage, or both of them cancelling each other out. This is to help folks adapt to circumstances that led to characters getting trapped in one scenario or another. So let’s see what they’ve done.

This gives us a look under the hood. You can see, plainly, that everything here is rendered on your standard battle grid style layout. Every square is a 5-foot square, and your movement is square-based, as it is with any D&D game that uses minis. You can see here that a paralyzed foe and lighting conditions are at play here. Lighting conditions are a big feature in both Solasta and Baldur’s Gate 3, and both devs clearly want to play with rules that are often ignored at most tables. When was the last time you were penalized for being in dim lighting?

I wonder if we’ll see an uptick in that, after these games hit the table. At any rate, advantage and disadvantage aren’t the only things at play here. Check out the new magic items with active powers. These are things like a necklace of fireball, or wand of cure light wounds–anything you’d have to activate.

We’ve just started implemented magic items with active powers! Staff of Fire? Check. Wand of Magic Missiles? Check. Boots of Levitation? Check.

You can even see that the self-destructing property of the magic items is on here (if you run out of charges and roll a 1, it’s gone). Anyway, here’s a look at some of the art and environment work going into the game:

All things considered, Solasta is shaping up beautifully. We’ll be keeping you updated the next time there’s a demo, so you can check it out for yourself.

Happy Adventuring!
