Privateer Press has recently announced that the Iron Kingdoms will be coming to 5th Edition with the launch of Iron Kingdoms: Requiem.

The Iron Kingdoms are a world steeped in fantasy and magic but also giant robots and steam-powered weapons with explosive results. Whether you’re looking at the lightning and magic gun-fueled kingdom of Cygnar or the magic robot, human-hostil realms of the Retribution of Scyrah, the Iron Kingdoms sound like they are a world you’d play a game in. And you’d be right, they’re the setting of Warmachine and Hordes. And they’ve also had their own RPG system, in fact, back in the day, there was a 3rd Edition (3.0 not 3.5) that took place in the Iron Kingdoms and, while it had its problems, it delivered on the experience of adventuring in a world where Warjacks are just like hanging out.

In the old version, they very much went the Warhammer Fantasy route, and you weren’t necessarily playing characters like you would in the miniatures game, but rather, were playing smaller heroes from the world. Now, Privateer Press is geared to venture into the world of 5th Edition D&D with their Iron Kingdoms again, as they’ve just announced a new game, Iron Kingdoms: Requiem, which will be Kickstarting soon. Let’s take a look!

Embark upon a journey of adventure and intrigue in a world where steam power and gunpowder meet sword and sorcery. Armed with mechanika and accompanied by mighty steamjacks, explore the soot-covered cities of the Iron Kingdoms and the aftermath of the otherworldly invasion of the infernals.

Take on the persona of unique character classes, like the gun mage, who combines powerful magic with a deadly acumen for firearms, or the steamjack-commanding warcaster, who can command 10-ton autonomous machines of war with just a thought. Explore a fantastic world rebuilding itself after an apocalypse as it marches onward with its industrial revolution.

So right away we get the sense of what the game is going to hold in hand. It looks like you’ll be playing a little more higher-powered and higher-status character this time around, and it’ll be taking place after the invasion of the Infernals. So if you want to see how Immoren is holding together now that the Infernals have come to try and collect on their ancient, apocalyptic debt, this is a great place to do it.

The Orgoth were driven from western Immoren more than four hundred years ago, but the decisions made during the rebellion still echo through the world. There are many strange legends from the last days of that war—tales of dark, mysterious allies who helped drive off the invaders. Some say it would have been impossible to defeat the Orgoth without this help, that the rebel leaders had to make dangerous deals with infernal powers. These tales have proven true, and the Iron Kingdoms have recently been irrevocably changed by the Claiming, an attempt by these infernal creatures to take the payment they have long been owed—an unfathomable number of souls.

I think that’s a fantastic choice for an RPG, it gives you plenty of excuses to find dangerous locales to explore, weird evil magics to uncover, and so on. And since you’ll be playing as characters like gun mages and warcasters, there’s a lot to look forward to getting up to in terms of power level. Here’s a look a what you can find in the book:

Delve into the award-winning world of the Iron Kingdoms with the latest edition of the Iron Kingdoms Role Playing Game from Privateer Press. Iron Kingdoms: Requiem combines this fantastic setting with the newest edition of the world’s most popular roleplaying game.

When making a character, you’ll be able to choose from many of the familiar countries and cultures of the setting. Whether you want to be a human, gobber, trollkin, Rhulic dwarf, ogrun, Iosan, or Nyss elf, this book provides all the rules that make these different peoples unique. When choosing a class, there are options for many you’re already familiar with, from the stalwart man-at-arms fighter to the free-flowing monk of the Order of the Fist. Beyond these are brand new rules for playing the characters that make the Iron Kingdoms such a memorable setting. These new classes include, among others, gun mages, arcane mechanics, combat alchemists, and warcasters.

Alongside these options are new feats, spells, and backgrounds to make your characters feel even more a part of the world of the Iron Kingdoms.

And of course, you’ll also find all manner of rules for the unique aspects of the Iron Kingdoms. So magic firearms, mechanika like the weapons of a storm knight or one of the battlemages of House Shyeel, or the giant Warjacks of course…

…it’s gonna put the high fantasy in high fantasy. Iron Kingdoms: Requiem is set to launch later this year, so keep an eye out here folks, we’ll let you know when that happens, or sign up for their newsletter here.
