In this twist on the Arthurian Legend the Lady of the Lake and her journey to save her people takes center stage.

This is hardly the first time the legend been adapted, but this version makes some interesting choices and is narrated by a central character that doesn’t have much of a voice in the original stories. It’s based on Tom Wheeler’s best selling YA graphic novel that was illustrated by Frank Miller (yes, that Frank Miller).

Based on the New York Times bestselling book, Cursed is a re-imagination of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue, a young woman with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake. After her mother’s death, she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a humble mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword. Over the course of her journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins, and their complicit King Uther. Cursed is a coming-of-age story whose themes are familiar to our own time: the obliteration of the natural world, religious terror, senseless war, and finding the courage to lead in the face of the impossible.

It looks like a light stop gap for those missing high fantasy stories, and something you could watch with your older kids instead of everyone veering off into separate rooms after dinner (believe me, I know that’s challenge right now).

The series features Katherine Langford (Nimue/The Lady of the Lake), Devon Terrell (Arthur), Gustaf Skarsgård(Merlin), Daniel Sharman (Weeping Monk), Sebastian Armesto (King Uther Pendragon), and Matt Stokoe (Gawain).

Season one of Cursed arrives on Netflix July 17th.
