There’s something sinister brewing in D&D’s Discord–but what is this hideous laughter hinting at? Is an old favorite book about to make a comeback?

Another mystery is brewing for Dungeons & Dragons. A recent announcement suggested that “something is brewing in the official D&D Discord.”

If you click the link in the tweet above, it sends you to the D&D Discord News channel where you find a file labeled feather and tart.mp3, which, when played, produces about 16 seconds worth of feminine laughter. Now, notably, tiny tarts, and a feather waved in the air are the material components for Tasha’s Hideous Laughter, a spell that carries a fairly significant name in the D&D world. Like many of the spells with a person’s name attached to them, Tasha is a powerful spellcaster who invented her own spells–but you might know her by another name. Because Tasha was the alias adopted by Iggwilv, the Witch-Queen of D&D.

You might also recognize the name from the Demonomicon of Iggwilv, Tasha/Iggwilv is an iconic D&D villain who has appeared in every edition of the game. Born as Natasha the Dark, she grew up in the Dancing Hut of Baba Yaga, and learned how to summon demons and for a while lived in Greyhawk where she joined the Company of Seven, a band of heroes all of whom have magic items named after them: Keoghtom, Murlynd, Tasha, Zagig, Heward, Quaal, and Nolzur.

She later took the name Iggwilv and started an affair with Graz’zt, a demon prince, and together they created Iuz and many other things in the D&D world. But the fact that she is the one responsible for the Demonomicon seems to be most relevant, if this is somehow related to the announcement of a new book. Could the November announcement be an updated Demonomicon with planar player options built in? Will we see Tasha’s Guide to Magic?

Either way, over on Instagram, more details have emerged, notably that whatever revelation is coming, should be on August 24th. So check back Monday for more news!
