This past Friday, Eric Lang, co-CEO at CMON announced he’d be stepping down to focus on design and activism, effective September 1st.

Eric Lang, one of the game design greats, and one of the driving forces at CMON in recent years, has announced that he’ll be stepping down from the day-to-day management in the company, hoping to free up time to focus on both game design and activism. After the recent successes of both Marvel United and Ankh–both spearheaded by Lang–it seems the time is right to focus on advocacy and changing the hobby as a whole.

What does that mean for CMON? Here’s a look at Lang’s statement, and a few relevant details.

“The last three years have been fantastic, both professionally and personally. Over the past few months, we drafted a long-term release plan with some truly great titles, which will continue to bear fruit for many years to come. Now felt like the right time for me to return to my roots; focusing on game design and public advocacy for our amazing hobby.

I’m so proud of this team, and how much we’ve grown together. Indeed, I feel very fortunate that I’ll continue to work with CMON in this new freelance capacity long into the future. Keep an eye out for the incredible games we’ve got coming up.”

Though Lang will be stepping down from the managerial role, he still has many projects in the work. And it seems the parting is on good terms, given comments from Lang’s fellow CMONers:

“Eric’s insight, wit, professionalism and sheer talent have helped CMON immensely, and we look forward to helping him realize his vision for himself, our future games, and the tabletop industry,” said Chern Ann Ng, co-CEO of CMON. CMON’s COO David Preti added, “Eric has had an unparalleled run at CMON, and every game he designed for us set the bar a little higher. Together, we’ve built from the ground up the premiere design and development team in the industry. I’m proud of our work together and to be able to call him a close friend, and I wish him all the best. I can’t wait to work with him in this whole new way.”

Lang’s upcoming CMON games include the highly anticipated tabletop adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077, as well as a Blood Rage sequel, and a family game co-designed with Mike Elliot codenamed Barrrge. And that’s without mentioning the “more than a dozen other projects” yet to be announced.

Lang, recently in the news following a banning and unbanning from Twitter, as well as his clash with a campaign of serial harassment, will surely  have more games yet to come.

We’ll be keeping an eye on the story as it develops, so be sure to check back for more updates.
