With Baldur’s Gate 3 Early Access day right around the corner, we’re taking a look at exactly which classes–and subclasses you can play.

Baldur’s Gate 3 hits early access a week from today, and soon gamers the world over will be coming to grips with the fact that ceremorphosis (the process by which mind flayers reproduce) is all in the head.

But before early access day arrives, why not take a preview of what awaits you. Larian Studios have been pulling out all the stops with this one, as we have seen at their recent Panel From Hell, and the dev logs released since. The game has millions of lines of dialogue, attempting to account for any situation, including interacting with new companions like a sentient intellect devourer or awakened animals you might convince to join your party–and NPC reactions to these quirky companions.

And that’s because it’s all about choice. One of the most important choices you can make in D&D is what kind of character you’ll play as, and with Early Access around the corner, we can confirm the options available to players on day one. While character classes are limited to only six of the game’s basic 11 classes (with more planned to be added in over the course of early access), we know for a fact that each will have at least two subclasses available to them, so really you can build up to twelve different character class options. Take a look:

  • Fighter – Battle Master, Eldritch Knight
  • Wizard – Evocation, Abjuration
  • Rogue – Arcane Trickster, Thief
  • Ranger – Hunter, Beast Master
  • Cleric – Life, Light, Trickery
  • Warlock – Fiend, Great One

We’ve also gotten to see some of the new benefits that your mind flayer tadpole will confer upon you. You’ll get the ability to read certain thoughts, link minds with other companions who have tadpoles embedded in them, and as the game progresses, play with more and more psionic options. Though… the more you play, the more the Mind Flayers have their alien influence on your brain.

The other half of character choice in D&D is what brand of playable folk you run with–at early access, players will be able to pick from:

  • Human
  • Halfling
  • Elf
  • Tiefling
  • Drow
  • Githyanki
  • Vampire Spawn

And speaking of Vampires, we know there are five “iconic characters” that are like the origin stories out of Divinity: Original Sins 1 & 2:

  • Astarion – Elf/Vampire Rogue
  • Gale – Human Wizard
  • Lae’ zel – Githyanki Warrior
  • Shadowheart – Half-Elf Cleric
  • Wyll – Human Warlock

You can recruit them over the course of Early Access as well. And these will serve as the party members that other players who join the game with you via the drop-in online multiplayer (or the soon to be added on couch co-op multiplayer) can take command of. Just be careful who you play with, you don’t want someone to go around pickpocketing or worse while you’re just trying to have a conversation.
