D&D: Fighters Unlock Power Of The Mind – New Psi Subclass In Tasha’s Cauldron

Psionics are here to stay in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. 5th Edition promises to change the way they work, and the new Psi Warrior leads the charge.

Tasha’s Cauldron is full of all kinds of new subclasses, and today, D&D Lead Rules designer, Jeremy Crawford, unveiled the Psi Warrior and its gorgeous art in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything.

The Psi Warrior is a psionic-fueled fighter that draws on the power of the mind to accomplish incredible feats and deal psychic damage to foes. We’ve had a look at some of the new psionic spells, but this subclass doesn’t really use spells, so much as they have a psionic talent die that helps fuel their powers but slowly dwindles over the course of play. As of the latest unearthed arcana, it was a d6 that you could roll to supplement various ability checks or attacks, but when it rolls a 6 it decreases to a d4, and when that rolls a 4 it becomes unusable until you finish a long rest.

We’ll see if that dwindling mechanic sticks around, as we know that some of these subclasses have undergone some fairly substantive revisions between the last Unearthed Arcana and the final version. The Wild Soul Barbarian is one example–but other subclasses, like the Genie Patron Warlock have undergone cosmetic adjustments and that’s about it.

My money’s on the psionic talent die mechanic still being in play. It felt too new and like such a divergence from where the concept of “psionics” had previously been going, that it felt like WotC really planting their flag and saying “this is how it’ll work.” We have three different psionic subclasses to dig through with the Aberrant Mind, Soul Knife, and Psi Warrior, so once the book is out, check back to see how it all works out.

What subclass are you most excited for?
