D&D: WizKids’ New Tower Is Incredible
There is no more iconic a location for an adventure than inside or atop a tower, and Wizkids’ new Icon of the Realms setpiece is second to none.
Whether you’re fighting against a powerful archmage or seeking out treasure from a long lost empire that has since faded into obscurity, there’s no location quite like a tower for adventure. Towers are, in many ways, dungeons that just go in two directions, because you get below and above the tower. At any rate, towers are a great place for an adventure, and WizKids knows this considering that they’ve made one of their newest Icons of the Realms set “The Tower.” They sent us a package, and, holy cow, this thing is gorgeous.
It is also massive. This is the table in our studio and this behemoth of a box crowds out pretty much anything else atop it. But it’s not just a big box, it’s a richly detailed setpiece. Check out the circle of robed figures ringing the top, and the big domed window…
All of which you can see in action inside the piece. This tower comes in multiple layers, as you can see, and it’s fairly easy to assemble:
Each of these pieces combines to make the whole tower, but you can also keep them separate to play in each floor of this. You’ll find distinct interiors spiralling your way to the top.
Again, we can’t get over how big this kit is. It’s such an incredible detail, and it comes pre-gridded and pre-painted, so all you have to do is get your favorite miniatures out and go to town on this thing. Every space is conveniently broken up into five foot chunks.

The Tower features removable windows, buttresses, stairs, and floors, and can be split into three levels for ease of play. Additionally, the tower also features three double-sided floor tiles, with a gridded and non-gridded version, so you can further customize your play experience. Each floor of the tower is balanced so that it can sit on the table on its own, allowing you to set up each floor ahead of time and reveal them to the table when the time is right. The buttresses on the ground floor can be removed or rearranged to suit your needs, as can the windows and skylight on the upper floors and roof of the tower. Your players can rappel through the broken glass atop the tower or climb through a destroyed window in order to stealthily enter a decrepit ruin. They can even march right up to the iron doors of a fastidiously maintained tower. The roleplaying opportunities afforded by the modular tower allow you to craft any number of unique encounters for your adventuring party!
