Star Wars: Mandalorian S2E6 Easter Eggs

This week fan favorites are back from season one and the original trilogy as well as multiple nods for fans who consume everything Star Wars or love memes.

Boba’s Tusken Long Rifle and Gaffi Stick

Minus his Mandalorian armor or weapons and plus a few years on Tatooine, it seems Boba Fett has had to make do with the weapons he could get his hands on after escaping the Sarlacc. His long rifle and gaffi stick are usually weapons you’d expect to see on a Tusken Raider, but he seemed to have a pretty good handle on them. Also, this was the coolest I’ve ever thought Boba Fett ever was!

Boba Mentions The Mando Civil War and His Chain Code References Concord Dawn and Jaster Mareel

It’s not surprising that Mandalore’s civil war would get mentioned, but between this week’s and Bo Katan’s appearance a few weeks ago it seems like they may be preparing us to see some blowback or closure to that endnote in Star Wars history. It probably won’t come up this season, but it (and Grand Admiral Thrawn!) will likely be plots for season three. His chain code was also readable if you’re patient and have a Mando’a alphabet handy. Jaster Mareel is mentioned, and while he was previously a Legends character who had a relationship with the Fetts, it seems he is officially making the jump back into canon. We may never meet him, but it’s always fun to check another Legends character off of the canon again list.

The Dark Troopers Are Back

After catching a glimpse of the Dark Troopers on Moff Gideon’s ship a few weeks back, they have finally joined the battlefield in all of their glory to….. kidnap a sleeping baby. I’m looking forward to seeing them in their full deadly glory eventually, but so far they jumped out of a ship in low orbit, grabbed Grogu, and then flew directly back up again. It was a simple move, but it definitely said “super secret special ops” to me. Seeing them in operation definitely makes them look less like manned suits and more like highly capable droids, so I’ll be interested in how they’re utilized going forward.

Moff Gideon Evokes the Luke Lightsaber Meme

Remember how we’ve all been making fun of Luke for immediately looking down the saber end of his lightsaber hilt less than two seconds after it was handed to him? In a delightful show of cheekiness and a tiny nod to the audience, Gideon lets Grogu know that he can’t hold the dark saber, he’ll “put an eye out.”

Follow the (Blue) Butterflies

When they arrive on Tython, Grogu is briefly interested in a blue butterfly. On its face, this is a benign and very cute scene that makes us all say “Dawww” about Baby Yoda. But it also references earlier and very minor bits of Star Wars Canon and in the comics and Star Was Kids YouTube shorts, Vader and Ben Solo are both shown surrounded by blue butterflies. They could represent calm and peace or metamorphosis, but both of those characters are strongly dark-side leaning characters with tiny glimmers of redeemability sprinkled in. And seeing as how Grogu is not above a rage-fueled force tantrum, it’s not unreasonable to think that he may have more in common with those famous antagonists down the road.
