Starting a new Blood Angels army? Picked up a Combat Patrol and not sure where to go next? We’ve got a few suggestions.

After conferring with our resident Goatboy about it, we’ve got a few recommendations for that new Blood Angels Combat Patrol box. If you want to take it from Combat Patrol sized games all the way up to a 2k list, here’s a few next steps for units you can pick up and run with the list.

These are units that should give you some flexibility to play around with different things and customize it to your playstyle. Feel free to modify and change things around once you get a better feel for the army. That said we like all of these units from the Blood Angels so they aren’t bad buys anyhow.

Indomitus Marines

The Indomitus Box got a second run so there are still boxes of these floating around out there. If you can get your hands on the Marine 1/2, you’re going to be sitting pretty. It’s a bunch of extra HQs, plus you’ll be able to fill out your troops now. Oh and this is also just over 1000 points more of marines.

Librarian Dreadnought

These bad boys are currently unavailable on GW’s website. I hope it’s because they are just getting reboxed for 9th edition. Anyhow, it’s another HQ option and it turns out that when your dreadnoughts can toss around some BA psychic powers, they can be a pretty big problem for folks. Personally, I was hoping we’d see a BA version of the Redemptor Dreadnought – maybe a double fist version or one with the same psychic option – oh well. This is still a good addition to your collection for a Blood Angels player. And it’s unique to your chapter!

Sanguinary Guard

You’ll probably want to pick up 2 boxes of Sanguinary Guard so you can have the option to run either 2 x 5 man squads or 1 x 10 man squad. This is another unit that is unique to the Blood Angels and it’s another hard-hitter. Plus, they can use those jump packs to get around the board and cause problems. It’s another great addition to any Blood Angel collection.

If you manage to get your hands on all these options, you’ll have a really nice core for a new Blood Angels army. This should put you in the 2k ballpark and you’ll be able to get some games in. Again, all of these units are good options to have but from here, it’s going to come down to personal preference. You’re going to need to “season” your army to the flavor you like. See what works for you, see what works in your local meta (if you can actually PLAY in stores or with a gaming club) and then adjust.

You might find that the Outriders need more bikes to be viable. Or you might really like those Eradicators and find them to outperform the Aggressors. Play some games and find out for yourself! Part of the fun of the game is experimenting with units and figuring out what works best for you. Who knows, there might be a Gladiator in your future – or a Mephiston!

“Me or a Gladiator? C’mon…”
