D&D: How The Druid Works In Baldur’s Gate 3

Earlier this week Larian Studios revealed that Druids were coming to Baldur’s Gate 3. Today we’re taking a look at how the new class will work.

Druids are one of the more complex classes in D&D. They are spellcasters, which on its own is enough to give them an impressive toolset of abilities, but on top of that, every druid gains Wild Shape, an ability that transforms the druid into an animal. Depending on your Druidic Circle you can change into a wide variety of beasts from birds to bears. And that’s just getting started–here’s a look at how the new druid will work in Baldur’s Gate 3 patch 4.

You can see the whole patch overview in Larian Studios’ Panel from Hell 2, of course, but it looks like Druids will have all the usual tricks. In the livestream panel you could see a fairly typical suite of Druid spells on display, Produce Flame, Vine Whip, and probably the best interpretation of the Flaming Sphere spell I’ve seen–it makes it actually seem intimidating:

The full list of druid spells we’ve seen so far

  • Flame Blade
  • Spike Growth
  • Faerie Fire
  • Create or Destroy Water
  • Entangle
  • Flaming Sphere
  • Thorn Whip (which looks like Larian is having fun with)
  • Goodberry
  • Moonbeam

But the real draw of the class is the Wild Shape. There are seven different forms you can turn into:

  • Cat
  • Bear (or a Polar Bear for Moon druids)
  • Dire Raven
  • Spider
  • Cat
  • Wolf
  • Giant Badger
  • Intellect Devourer (because of your tadpole)

They are planning to unleash more. And of course, each of these has its own different actions that you can use, so fighting as a Deep Rothe, for instance, makes you into an aggressive melee charger, whereas fighting as the Spider lets you create webs to trap your opponent, or the Giant Badger lets you tunnel.

But that’s not all. Larian has proven their willingness to go the extra mile uphill both ways in the snow, and so each animal form will have its own special interactions, reactions, and voice lines where appropriate. For example, turning into a wolf means you can speak with wolves, turning into a bear lets you talk to bears, and so on, and that makes creatures react to you differently.
