Kickstarter Million Dollar RPG’s

4 Minute Read
Mar 1 2021

Two Kickstarted RPGs have breached the million dollar mark and they are both ending this week. From Twisted Taverns to Magic rings, check em out!

Kickstarter has been responsible for a boom in the RPG industry, providing a crowdfunded home for projects from the smallest Indie RPG, to nostalgia factory revamps of your favorites from years past like Old School D&D adventures or Worlds of Darkness. But a few projects have really hit new heights, like Matt Colville’s Strongholds & Followers book which raised millions of dollars.

Or today’s Kickstarters, both of which have surpassed the million dollar mark. It’s rare to see two projects popping off like that, but it helps highlight the wide audience that Kickstarter potentially reaches. They are Fria Ligan’s new take on the Lord of the Rings rpg, The One Ring, 2nd Edition and a collection of taverns, taprooms, inns, and bars for use in your games of D&D 5E, or other fantasy adventure game.

Earlier there was some critique from the community owing to the fact that these two big tent projects were surging when Kickstarter’s ZineQuest, ostensibly meant to showcase Indie RPGs was also happening, but platforms like Kickstarter hope to show that there’s not a limited pool of audience, and that the community can rally around many things.

That said, it’s remarkable for two projects to go off quite so big and so close to each other. It just goes to show how hungry everyone is for fantasy right now. If last year was the year of Mechs and the year before was all about sci-fi dystopias, it looks like the pendulum is swinging back around to swordplay by torchlight.

The One Rong 2E

The One Ring™ is a roleplaying game based on The Hobbit™ and The Lord of the Rings™, two extraordinary works of fiction by the beloved author and respected academic, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, published in partnership with Sophisticated Games.

First released in 2011, its award-winning design was hailed as the best attempt at bringing Middle-earth to the gaming table to date, thanks to its thematic rules and painstaking attention to detail. For 10 years, players of the game have traveled far and wide across Middle-earth, adventuring for multiple decades of game time.

Today, it is time for the game to enter a new era – this new edition of The One Ring brings players further into the Twilight of the Third Age with a new hardbound volume, presenting:

  • A set of updated and streamlined rules, developed thanks to years of players’ feedback and raising the game to the standards of quality that have made Free League so popular.
  •  A new setting to experience – the Lone-lands of Eriador in the year is 2965 of the Third Age. This is a vast land that once saw the glory of the North Kingdom of the Dúnedain.
  •  A complete visual redesign of art and graphics, offering a view of Middle-earth that is fresh and familiar at the same time.
