Solasta: Crown of the Magister, the most faithful videogame adaptation of D&D 5E yet, leaves early access behind and opens up its campaign May 27th.
Get ready for some serious dungeon crawling adventure in a few short weeks. On May 27th, Solasta: Crown of the Magister, the D&D 5E videogame being developed by Tactical Adventures over the last three years, launches in full at last.
If you haven’t heard of the game, you can check out our previous coverage here–but the gist of it is, Solasta: Crown of the Magister is one of the most faithful adaptations of the rules of D&D 5th Edition. It gives you all the grid-centered, turn-based combat straight out of the SRD (not the Player’s Handbook), which has presented the team with some unique challenges. As they outline, they can only use the material included in the latest D&D SRD, the open source rules, if you will, which means they have a base of only one archetype per class, for instance, and can’t use monsters like Mind Flayers.
So they did what any good studio would do. They created their own paths instead. And now, as the game prepares for its launch, let’s check in once more with Solasta: Crown of the Magister.
According to the team, so far the game will take more than forty hours to get through the main campaign, and the game will also launch with the new Dungeon Maker feature so you can build your own dungeons to quest through, so the only limit to your adventure is your imagination.
The full game’s level cap will be 10 at launch:
We’ve announced from the start that you wouldn’t be able to go past level 10 in our first game at launch. There are quite a few reasons for that, as each additional level would require:
- Development time to implement the new features, as well as animations, visual effects and sound effects for each class.
- Time and money to design, create and implement new and higher CR monsters (who also need their own animations and effects), otherwise you would just demolish any encounter at higher level.
- Time and money to increase the length of the campaign, meaning more work for the narrative and level design teams, as well as more recordings required.
So we always knew and said that level 10 would be the limit, given the scope of Solasta: Crown of the Magister. Which doesn’t necessarily mean that the level cap will forever stay at level 10 post-launch!
And you won’t find every class in the game at launch, you’ll have Fighter, Rogue, Wizard, Cleric, Paladin, Ranger, and Sorcerer in a free DLC. Other than that, get ready for adventures in the world of Solasta.
