Marvel’s silent defenders of earth go to war in Eternals.

Eternals is directed by Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao, her signature style is all over this gorgeous first trailer. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige talked about seeing footage from the movie for the first time with Variety.

“[Chloé Zhao] was really fighting for practical locations… And I had to keep saying, ‘This is right out of a camera; there’s no VFX work to this at all!’ Because it was a beautiful sunset, with perfect waves and mist coming up from the shore on this giant cliffside — really impressive stuff.”

That fight was worth it. Zhao’s contribution to the MCU is something we haven’t seen before – both in visual style and scope. It looks amazing.

This is the Marvel movie I’m looking the most forward to this year. It’s a part of the universe that hasn’t been touched on a lot. We’ve seen a bit of space, we’ve seen chaos magic, we’ve seen a little bit of multiverse – we’ve gotten glimpses of the Celestials in other movies (they made their debut in the first Guardians of the Galaxy), but not like this.

The characters are Jack Kirby creations and have been part of the comics for over 40 years. The Eternals result of the Celestials (the first lifeforms in the universe) creating sentient life on Earth. They are the planet’s silent defenders that prefer not to interfere with humanity’s evolution. That changes when the Deviants show up – where the movie’s story begins.

There have been some good changes in the portrayal of these immortals on screen, pulling them out of the mid 1970s. From left – Kumail Nanjiani (Kingo), Lauren Ridloff (Makkari), Ma Dong-seok (Gilgamesh), Angelina Jolie (Thena), Brian Tyree Henry (Phastos), Salma Hayek (Ajak), Gemma Chan (Sersi), Lia McHugh (Sprite), Richard Madden (Ikarus), Barry Keoghan (Druig).

Eternals arrives in theaters on November 5th.
