MTG: Iconic D&D Items And Spells Reborn As Magic Cards

3 Minute Read
May 10 2021

You’ve seen Tiamat, you’ve seen the Vorpal Sword, but these aren’t the only previews from Adventures in the Forgotten Realms.

Get ready to adventure in the Forgotten Realms, but not as a rogue or a sorcerer hoping to find treasure, rather as a powerful Planeswalker calling up classic creatures from monstrous manuals and handbooks full of adventurers to do battle at your behest.

That’s right we’re talking about the next installment of previews from the upcoming D&D-themed Magic: the Gathering set: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. Several iconic D&D staples are reborn in Magic form. Check ’em out below.

First up the iconic wondrous item: Portable Hole. In D&D it’s exactly what the name suggests–a portable hole you can unfold and put on the ground or against a wall and shove a creature in there for a while, and that effect is nicely translated here with its exiling effects.

Far more dangerous, though, are spells like Power Word Kill, which in the game instantly kills anyone whose hit point total is below 100. And in Magic, it’s represented as the immediate (and efficient) removal of any non-outsider or dragon creature. And at one colorless and one black mana, this is certainly a far easier spell to cast than the spell’s 9th level equivalent, which means we ought to appreciate how powerful Planeswalkers truly are.

Equally as exciting though are the new D&D-themed lands that’ll be featured in the set. Let’s take a look at each of them. First up, Plains.

I’m pretty sure I’ve been on this adventure. I love the flavor text here, which feels like something that boxed text/read aloud text would be in an adventure module.

This trend continues on all of them–each of these are snippets from an unseen Dungeon Master delivered to the player themselves.

I hope more cards are like this–it’s such a great way to capture flavor of the set in one easy stroke.

Finally we round out the set with the Mountain and Forest.

So what’s next? Well, doubtless we’ll see more hints of things to come, but then:

  • June 29: Previews begin
  • July 8: Available on MTG Arena and Magic Online
  • July 16–18: Webcam Prerelease play through SpellTable beta
  • July 16–22: Prerelease Week, including in-store play (where available)
  • July 23: Worldwide release

So Stay Tuned!
