Grab some dice and your favorite brightly colored tights, Marvel has just announced a new RPG – Marvel Multiverse coming 2022.

Marvel is once again returning to the tabletop roleplaying world with the announcement of a new roleplaying game: Marvel Multiverse. This marks the return of the venerable comics publisher to an industry they’ve long since dabbled in, all the way back to that most misunderstood of years, 1984, when they partnered with TSR to release Marvel Super Heroes.

In the ensuing years there have been a few other Marvel tabletop RPGs, including the Marvel Super Heroes Adventure Game in 1998, the Marvel Universe Roleplaying Game (or MURPG, pronounced as it’s spelled), back in 2003, published by Marvel itself to mixed success. But the key difference here is that while those games drew heavily on the Marvel IP, the Marvel IP didn’t have a whole Cinematic Universe (and Disney’s billions) propping them up.

Times have never been better for Marvel fans (and that’s including the fans who love the comics and the fans who hate the comics), which sets up the new Marvel Multiverse game with quite the ramp into launch. Written by Matt Forbeck, the new RPG employs a “brand-new” dice engine, the D616 system. Let’s take a look.

Building on decades of thrilling characters and stories from Marvel Comics, the MARVEL MULTIVERSE ROLE-PLAYING GAME: PLAYTEST RULEBOOK will unveil a thrilling glimpse into the full scope of the Marvel Multiverse. Players will finally be able to take on the roles of Marvel’s most famous Super Heroes – or create entirely new ones – to fight some of the most dangerous Super Villains in the Marvel Universe!

And as you might well expect, the book leans heavily on the heroes that everyone knows and loves. It’ll be launching with a Playtest Rulebook to start introducing folks to the game and will include pre-generated characters for some of the most recognizable heroes from the Marvel Universe:

  • Spider-Man
  • Black Panther
  • Captain America
  • Thor
  • Captain Marvel
  • Ms. Marvel
  • Wolverine
  • Storm
  • And many more!

The game wants to be beginner friendly, which is a bold move to make, and a signifier that Marvel is hoping to capture some of the groundswell of enthusiasm for all things RPG right now.

Written and co-designed by award-winning and New York Times best-selling author Matt Forbeck (The Marvel Encyclopedia, Dungeons & Dragons: Endless Quest), the MARVEL MULTIVERSE ROLE-PLAYING GAME: PLAYTEST RULEBOOK will introduce players to the all-new D616 System, an accessible and easy-to-learn system for newcomers to tabletop RPGs and a natural evolution for those familiar with the most popular tabletop role-playing games on the market. Use Might, Agility, Resilience, Vigilance, Ego, and Logic to win the day, and discover your true abilities as you face impossible odds!

The playtest rules are due out in 2022, with the game launching in full in 2023 so be on the look out for an opportunity to sign up soon. In the meantime, we’ll be here wondering what a d616 looks like. Maybe it’s a tesseract. Marvel seems to love tesseracts.
