Having trouble with Monsters in Age of Sigmar? Maybe try out one of these Core Battalions from the General’s Handbook 2021.

Games Workshop had some ideas on how to deal with Monsters in the new edition of AoS as these big beasties got some serious buffs. That said, they had some solid ideas listed out but only a few of them really felt “universal” – as in a strategy that anyone could use. Really, other than “add your own monsters” the only other option that pretty much every army could do was take one of the Core Battalions from the GHB 2021.

“Don’t forget about battalion abilities. In particular, the Hunters of the Heartlands core battalion from the 2021 General’s Handbook prevents even the lowliest line units from being targeted by monstrous rampage abilities. It’s the perfect place to stash your dedicated Monster-hunters if you really don’t want them being roared at.”

Hey, that’s great! But what are those battalions? Good question. Let’s take a look at them to find out:

Alpha-Beast Pack is really great for the whole “Can’t Beat’em, join’em” crowd. It’s also a pre-game move of D6″ inches. This one isn’t exactly mind-blowing… but it IS free. If you’re already running 2 Monsters, why not throw them in the battalion for the extra move?

The second one is a bit more applicable to, well, everyone*. Considering every 2000 point list has to have at least 3 Battleline troops everyone can use this Battalion. It’s a big deal! These three Troops cannot be targeted by your opponent’s monstrous rampages.

That means no Roar and no Stomp to deal with for these Troops. Again, these Core Battalions are free. So if you’re not running one of the other Core Battalions, you should really consider running Hunters of the Heartlands.

*Everyone that isn’t Sons of Behemat.
