‘Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom’ First Look – Expanded Universe, New Costumes, and Great Hair

First look at the Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom shows off a bigger universe and new foes.

Aquaman is DC’s most profitable movie ever (1.2 billion at the box office), so of course, we’re getting a sequel. The first one was fun, a good movie for when you want to turn your brain off and escape. The second one looks like it’s going bigger. Much bigger.

While it’s early for a trailer (the film is still in production), DC Fandome gifted us with concept art, costume first looks, and behind-the-scenes footage that shows off some fighting scenes with Patrick Wilson (Orm) and a training session with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Manta). Also: lead man Jason Mamoa running in the surf like a lumbering Bo Derek.

One piece of art reveals the possibility that we’ll be seeing The Scavenger aka Peter Mortimer on the big screen. Could this be the character Pilou Asbæk will play? Given the themes of the first movie and the DCEU love of New 52, I’m expecting that he’ll be the version that is on the hunt for Atlantean technology and weaponry in order to sell it to the highest bidder. Maybe we’ll be seeing the Crime Syndicate of America, too.

Given some of the art I’m wondering if they’re folding concepts of the canceled The Trench spin-off movie into this.

Oh, hi Storm! You’re looking much more majestic and threatening than your cartoon counterpart. I like it.

Nothing is known about the plot yet, but we’ll be seeing a lot of familiar faces in the sequel. James Wan returns to direct a cast that includes Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Temuera Morrison, Randall Park, Pilou Asbæk, Jani Zhao, Indya Moore, and Vincent Regan.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is scheduled to open on December 16, 2022. In the meantime, make sure you check out the animated miniseries Aquaman: King of Atlantis on HBOMax– great for fans of oddball animated shows like Adventure Time.
