Warhammer 40K: Mortarion Comes To Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters

3 Minute Read
Dec 1 2021

The Daemon Primarch of the Death Guard looms large over the latest from the developers of Warhammer 40K: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters.

Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters is quickly shaping up to be one of the most-anticipated 40K games around BoLS HQ and for good reason. The blend of XCOM style tactical combat with the awe-inspiring powers of Grey Knights as you take on the tides of Nurgle is such a rich playground.

And to the Chaos gathering at the gate, a Daemon Primarch strides forth. None other than Mortarion, the Primarch of Plagues and the Death Guard is here, teased by the developers in some grim, dark new footage of the…er…grim darkness of the distant future in which there is only war.

We’ll take a closer look at Mortarion below, but first check out the latest developer diary on the Death Guard themselves. Guided by The Bloom, these Plague Marines are pustulent, pestilent, and ready to party.

They carry seeds of the Bloom, and will infect whole worlds as we go. The more a world is infected, the more Nurgle can directly affect your missions, transforming enemies, warping in new Daemons, and more.

But you’ll have to watch out for the big guy himself, Mortarion, who has his own agenda that he’s following during the campaign. Check out what ol’ Morty’s up to without a Rick to keep an eye on him.

Who Is Mortarion in Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters?
Raised on the toxic world of Barbarus after the twenty Primarchs were scattered across the galaxy, Mortarion and his Legion, the Death Guard,  supported the Warmaster Horus in betrayal of the Emperor of Mankind, a path which led to him pledging his servitude to the Chaos God Nurgle in order to deliver himself and his sons from the Plague God’s Destroyer Plague.

Nurgle’s new Champion was gifted newfound power, becoming fear, death and plague made manifest. Emerging from the warp, the Death Guard’s once gleaming grey armour became rust-ridden and cracked, their bloated plague-ridden bodies spilling out from the joints of their corroded power armour.

Within the Eye of Terror, Mortarion casts his gaze into the physical universe from the warp. Preparing for his next move against the Imperium and preparing Nurgle’s latest and most dangerous gift, The Bloom.

Mortarion and the Grey Knights
The most memorable of clashes between the Grey Knights and the Death Guard came during the Battle of Kornovin, when the Sons of Titan mobilised on a scale few have ever seen in order to repel Mortarion’s incursion into the Imperium. As the battle raged, Supreme Grand Master Geronitan fell to the Death Lord, resulting in the elevation of Kaldor Draigo to lead the Chapter as Supreme Grand Master. Draigo fought his way to face Mortarion, and was able to banish the Daemon Primarch by speaking his True Name, carving Geronitan’s name onto his heart as he did so, earning Mortarion’s eternal hatred.

Warhammer 40K Chaos Gate: Daemon Hunters is due out in 2022
