Starting a game of D&D for the very first time ever? Here are a few things to know ahead of time. Have fun!

Playing D&D for the first time might seem a little daunting. But don’t worry, there’s plenty of ways to learn what you need. From watching live plays to reading through the rules, there are plenty of resources. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you’re playing for the first time!

You’re Not Limited to Video Game Rules

One of the first things a lot of folks fall back on when they play D&D for the first time is thinking of it like a fantasy video game. And to be fair, it’s a bit like one. There’s a lot of surface level similarities. You play a fantasy hero often on a fantasy quest.

But you’re not limited to “going around and finding someone who has a quest for you”. You can talk to anyone. Follow your whims. Investigate mysteries you discover for yourself. You don’t have to think of the world in video game rules. It’s often better to try and think of it like a world that you happen to be inhabiting as an adventuring hero.

Curiosity is Almost Always Rewarded

Along those lines, it also pays to be curious about the things in the world. If you really want to get into D&D, let your curiosity lead you. Don’t throw caution to the winds, but do let yourself investigate the things that spark your interest.

Follow up on those rumors you overheard in the tavern. Or ask the duke’s emissary if they need help with anything. Discover a strange ruin while exploring? Gather your party and venture forth!

Not Sure How Your Character Works? Just Ask

I cannot overstate the importance of asking questions. Especially if it’s your first time D&D-ing. Don’t be afraid to ask the DM (or another player) how something on your character sheet works. Because that’s the first step to learning how all the numbers fit together. Questions like “which dice do I need” or “what does this spell do again” will help you learn what your character can do. Speaking of…

Write Notes For Yourself

As you figure things out about your character, don’t forget to make little notes to remind yourself. There’s a lot to learn in D&D. I say this as someone who’s layed for years and still has trouble remembering everything. So I make little notes for myself to make my own little rules cheat sheet. It’s surprisingly helpful.

Have Fun

The most important thing, though, is to have fun. When you’re having fun with your friends, the rest is all just details. But if you’re trying to “get it right” you might forget to enjoy yourself. So try and have fun. Whatever that means for you. Some people discover they love goofing around and roleplaying, while others develop a love for combat.

Whatever answer is right for you, just remember to have fun, and also, I suppose to start really getting to know your calendar app.

Happy adventuring!
