In some games, lying is frowned upon (if not against the rules). But in these bluffing board games, deception is part of the fun!

Sometimes, lying during a game is considered cheating. But other times, it’s part of the game itself! Today, we’re focusing on the latter kind of game with these bluffing board games where lying, deception, and deceit are all in the rules and part of the fun.

Coup

Coup is a game that takes the concept of bluffing, lying, and backstabbing your way to victory up to an almost GameofThrones-esque level. It is a fast paced card game of outthinking and outmaneuvering your friends in order to squash rebellion, eliminate your competition, and claim absolute power for yourself. Games don’t tend to go longer than fifteen minutes and they are highly replayable and that kind of competitive that turns addictive.

Love Letters

Love Letters is a game of romancing the princess. Sounds nice, right? Well everyone else is trying to win the princess’s favor, too. So you’ll need to outwit your opponents to make yourself look the most trustworthy and romance-able. Each character has special skills that will help them not be caught by the other potential suitors, and hopefully successfully deliver their love letter to the princess.

Werewolf

To me, Werewolf is one of the ultimate and most quintessential deception games. Werewolves are terrorizing your village and your community has come together to root them out and get rid of them once and for all. Your job is to figure out who in your group is an innocent villager, and who is a monster in disguise. Usually, the entire village will come together to vote their most innocent neighbor out while the werewolf remains. But maybe your community will figure out who’s been transforming at night.

Liar’s Dice

This game will have you questioning which of your friends are honest mateys, and which are liars. Roll the dice, and start figuring out who’s rolled the highest number and who’s just bluffing about their rolls. Liar’s Dice is a simple game to play and learn as well as an easy first bluffing game. Losing a round means losing a dice and risking rolling lower next time. So make sure you’re confident before you accuse a crewmate of lying. Games go fast, and are endlessly replayable and portable. Plus, this game has a fun pirate theme!

Cash’n Guns

You’re one thief in a group of thieves about to score big. But someone may be out to take a bigger share of the loot than they deserve. Or maybe you are! Maybe you DO deserve that bigger cut and you’re going to take it! Only the bravest and most strategic crooks take home the most money. But then they’ll have to make sure they live long enough to spend it.
