Fight monsters with style and put on a great show just like in K-Pop Demon Hunters with these tabletop RPGs.

How many times has K-Pop Demon Hunters played in your place this week? Because here it’s been at least twice…. And we’re not even going to mention how many listens I’ve personally tallied on for that soundtrack. I’m not exactly a KPop fan; I can name probably two or three groups, and those are only because they’re big enough to be in the general zeitgeist. But I am a fan of good animation, fun stories, catchy music, and plays on the secret identity / magical girls / fighting-evil-by-moonlight-winning-love-by-daylight genre. And based on the numbers this movie is doing, I bet some of you are, too. So let’s play out next tabletop RPG with a KPop Demon Hunters vibe with these systems.

Monster of the Week

If you want to play a game with a little more of the demon-hunting focus, Monster of the Week is a horror-action game that’s reminiscent of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or The X-Files. There are weird things that go bump in the night and most people can’t see them. But your characters can, and it’s their job to bring them down. Aspects of your personality like cool, tough, and charming are measurable stats, so social situations can always have a chance of drama. And this game uses the Powered by the Apocalypse core system, so it’s very easy to pick up, learn, and play.

What if you’d like to go in a slightly different direction with this, but would like to stick to an Apocalypse system game? I’ve definitely played an entertainer-slash-world-saver in the MASKS system. Plus this is another system where your social standing is right there on your character sheet.

Til Dawn

For a game with a little more of a musical tilt, Til Dawn is a FATE Core game where players are DJs. But let’s be honest, that’s just a guide. You can be whatever kind of performer you want. Characters focus on music, their moods, relationships, and enhancing their skills in order to be the most prestigious performer possible. And of course, broadcast all of that drama.

Kamigakari: God Hunters

In Kamigakari, characters work as hunters, protecting the world from the thinning borders between our world and the supernatural. But using this power may transform your character into a dark god, themself. The Arms System lets players upgrade and customize their weapons. So you can weaponize a prop sword or your cell phone… Or even your voice. Because why not?

Girl by Moonlight

Girl by Moonlight is a multi-genre game that explores fighting for what you believe in, building relationships, embracing your true self, and sometimes even heartbreak. Which sounds like many of the themes of KPop Demon Hunters to me. This system uses the Blades in the Dark system in a way that’s unique, and focuses on the mix of interpersonal/emotional and adventurous stories that the magical girl genre is known for.
