You want to go on an adventure, but your friends aren’t around or you just want some alone time? It’s time for a solo tabletop RPG!

Getting together a whole group to play TTRPGs on a regular basis is notoriously difficult. My groups usually meet every two weeks, but one of them has been on hiatus for a month or so as a few party members are moving and the other game… I’m not sure if that game will ever be finished. It’s fine, everyone is living happily ever after in my mind.

So, for those times when you want to play through a story or build a beautiful world but don’t want to deal with the hassle of scheduling or different time zones, there are solo tabletop RPGs.

Thousand Year Old Vampire

This is a creative, wonderful, and heartbreaking journaling RPG. You take on the role of a thousand-year-old vampire, keeping a diary about your experiences and responding to writing prompts. But you’ve been alive for a very long time, and sometimes your memories become unreliable or are even lost completely. What have you experienced over the last thousand years? And what experiences have you entirely forgotten that you’ve even had?

The Wretched

The Wretched is a game of human resilience and perseverance, with a distinct horror spin. You play as the lone survivor of a horrific attack by something. Now you’re in space and alone with whatever-that-is. You’re running on adrenaline, fear, and desperation, knowing that there’s a better than good chance that you won’t survive the encounter either. But you also have to keep going.

Call of Cthulhu: Alone Against the Frost

Alone Against the Frost is a Call of Cthulhu solo adventure in the Canadian wilds. You are on a research mission in the Northwest Territories in the 1920s. But the environment is hostile, and there might be something horrible out there. Try to return with your reputation and wits intact. Or don’t.

Ironsworn

In Ironsworn you are a hero, sworn to undertake perilous quests in the fantasy setting of the Ironlands. The are wilds to be explored, battles to fight, story hooks, and everything you need to get a game started and going. This is an RPG that can be played Solo or with a group. So you can play a lone character in a dangerous world. Or, if your friends are available, you can still pay a visit to the Ironlands and see what adventures await.

There is also a sci-fi version of this game, Starforged.

Classified!

Classified! is a solo journaling RPG of capers, heists, and hijinks. You play as an agent tasked with acquiring targets for your client by performing actions and resolving card-drawn events. This game is played with a journal, a standard deck of cards, a four-sided die, and a copy of the rule book. You’ll be completing assignments and fixing jammed gadgets in no time.
