Huge LEGO ‘Pirates Of the Caribbean’ Ride Has Over 120,000 Pieces – Has Water, But No Rum
Yo-ho-ho! This massive LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean ride includes thousands of pieces, lights, and water works.
Since it opened in 1967, the Pirates of the Caribbean dark ride at Disneyland has become one of the most iconic and popular theme park rides in the world. This ride, which gives a look at the lives of pirates in the 16th and 17th centuries, takes guests on an epic water journey.
The original ride has seen more than 400 million riders, and replicas have been added to three other parks. Though it has undergone some alterations, the core of the ride hasn’t really changed in 51 years.
The ride is so popular that it’s spawned its own massive movie franchise. Starting in 2003, the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series has been a major part of pop culture, making names like Jack Sparrow and the Black Pearl household names around the world. Both on and off the screen, it’s a classic.

LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean Ride
Now LEGO is no stranger to Pirates of the Caribbean. Aside from their own generic pirate theme, they’ve put out a number of licensed Pirates sets over the years. However, all of those have focused on the movies. Brothers Joel and Jonathan Nueber (you can follow Jonathan here) set out to fix this.
They’ve built a truly incredible recreation of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride (mixing a few details of Disneyland and World). With over 120,000 parts stretching several feet long, this is a massive build. It’s not the size that’s most impressive here, though. It’s the fact that the ride is fully working, with a real river to take guests’ boats around it. And of course, being a dark ride, it’s got lights. One look at this build will have you singing ‘A Pirate’s Life for Me!’
The Details
This MOC is really a meticulously detailed recreation of the ride that is just… awesome. Like the actual ride, you start in a loading area, then go into a bayou region. From there, you go into the skull cave part, with lots of fun details and nods, all from the ride.
This part also takes the boats up. After this, they drop down the iconic skull slide drop that drops them into the battle between the pirates (in the Wicked Wench, the pre-burning Black Pearl) and the town. After that, you have classic scenes of the Pirates sacking the town and then a few last scenes in jails, and you are back at the start.
The details here are incredible and faithfully recreated from the ride. And most impressively, the ride really works. Thanks to some cool LEGO engineering, the whole system works as a water-based ride. While it might not use the 630,000 gallons of water that the real-life ride does, it does still use real water. The ride is also fully lighted, with some working animatronics of its own. It’s a really amazing build.
Check out this detailed look at the whole ride below. Pictures just don’t do it justice! Make sure to watch till the end, where they have some great comparisons of the real-life ride to the MOC.
