This massive LEGO Star Trek Enterprise NCC-1701 includes thousands of pieces, screen accurate details, and clever building techniques.

The USS Enterprise is built in the San Francisco shipyards but assembled in space. The NCC-1701 Enterprise has three captains during her time–Robert April, Christopher Pike, and James Kirk. April himself is responsible for overseeing much of the build of the ship. His wife, Sarah, oversees much of the medical bay design.

Lawrence “Larry” Marvick is one of the lead designers for Constitution-class ships, of which the Enterprise is one. The ship’s computers are designed by Dr. Richard Daystrom, the man for whom the Daystrom Institute is named. The Enterprise has 22 decks and a bottom deck.

The ship goes through a number of refits over the years… and Chris Melby has built two out of LEGO.

LEGO Enterprise NCC – 1701 (Refit)

First up is the Enterprise from Star Trek: The Motion Picture—a refit of the original NCC-1701. The ship was overhauled with upgraded systems and appearance, featuring larger nacelles and an overall more angular look.

The 30,000+ brick build comes in at 72 inches long and 35 inches wide; it has a full sheet of LEGO as its base. It’s built from the inside out, so the skin of the iconic ship is smooth with very minimal pegs showing.

It has great details like custom United Federation of Planets badging, marker lights, thrusters, twin photon launcher, shuttle hatches, shuttle bay, and port holes so the crew can look out into the stars.

Extra care was taken to make sure everything is to scale and at the right angles—the dish, star drive, the offset engine nacelles (lots of 241226 grille pieces there), and all of the connecting masts.

Milby walks us through the entire build in this video…

That’s not the only version he’s built. This 18,000 brick version, inspired by the Enterprise in J.J. Abrams’ movies, took eight months to build. It measures 68 inches long, 29 inches wide, and stands about 32 inches tall on its base.

“The build was stubborn right to the end, as I had to wait for the mail, a last minute Brick Link order, to put the finishing touches on the nacelles. Was it worth it?  8 months, tons of coin, tons of bricks, a few major headaches, more than a few internal explosions … Yeah it was. It was the build of a lifetime.  It was one for my ‘bucket list.'”

I have to agree… this is a beautiful ship. Again, smooth all the way around, no pegs to be seen.

Playmobil U.S.S. Enterprise

We’ve gotten a tease for the official Star Trek LEGO set(s), but they haven’t released details. If you want a giant Enterprise right now, the Playmobil version is giant, and it can withstand your kids playing with it.

The ship opens up to reveal the bridge, complete with a swiveling captain’s chair, and the engineering room with the ship’s dilithium core. It’s equipped with light and sound effects from the original show that can be controlled by an interactive app on your phone. The Enterprise can be displayed on the included cradle or suspended via a hook. Both options feature the iconic Starfleet badge shape.

  • 150 pieces
  • 40-inches Long, 18-inches Wide, 13-inches High
  • Includes Captain Kirk, Spock, Uhura, McCoy, Sulu, Scotty, and Chekov figures

Editor’s Note: the Enterprise seen in ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture’ was initially identified as the 1701/A, which was incorrect. This has been updated.
