Get ready, get set, go! This week, we’re going as fast as we can and maybe sabotaging our friends with these racing board games.

If you’ve managed to exist on the internet and somehow not learn about Umamusume Pretty Derby, allow me to tell you all about it. Well, a little about it. Basically, it’s a video game and anime series about anthropomorphized racehorse girls. The characters are all named for and modeled after actual racehorses, including their records and relationships. It’s a silly and wild concept, but it is also everywhere right now. I can’t escape Umamusume so maybe it’s time to lean into it and see what other race games there are, too.

Horse Racing

Starting with a classic game that looks like something my grandfather would have brought over for me to play. Sometimes the simplest games really are the best. And in this case, it’s also competitive, compact, and portable.

Cosmic Race

As intergalactic pilots, you are finally living your dream: participating in a super space race! You are so excited to line up for the start of this wild race. But pay attention to other spaceships and any other obstacles that could slow you down! Quickly cross the finish line and collect the most stars to win the Cosmic Race!

On each turn reveal the control tiles to manoeuvre your spaceship on the track and collect stars. Increase your speed, chose direction but be careful to not lose control or your spaceship will crash!

Racing to the finish is fun. So what if we did that in space?! This is a relatively easy game that will play in about twenty minutes, and racers will cross the finish line looking for a re-race. And just like some racing video games, be sure to watch for obstacles and boosts.

REM Racers

Get ready to feel the rush of the race with Corvus Belli’s game designed for all audiences! Dive into the heart-pumping excitement as you compete against your opponents in a thrilling competition where strategy and skill meet to reach the finish line. Accelerate towards the finish while dodging attacks, planning cunning tactics, and showcasing your unique abilities.

A slightly longer game for slightly older players, REM Racers will have you maneuvering your racer all over the track and trying to stay cool under pressure. Equipment cards will add weapons and chaos, so players will need to be quick and smart when making their next move.

Heat: Pedal to the Metal

Heat: Pedal to the Metal Family Board Game puts you in the driver’s seat of intense car races. Jockey for position to cross the finish line first, while managing your car’s speed so they won’t overheat. Select the right upgrades for your car to help hug the curves and keep your engine cool enough to maintain top speeds. Ultimately, driving skills will be the key to victory! Compete in a single race or use the “Championship System” to play a whole season in one game night. Children, teens, and adults will enjoy customizing their car before each race to claim the top spot of the podium. Heat: Pedal to the Metal Family Board Game is for 1-6 players, ages 10 and older. Average play time is 60 minutes.

If you just want a game about classic old-school car racing, this is it. Players have a lot of opportunity to effect the game and adapt to races, plus there are additional modules, so this is a game with a ton of replayability. But while other games may have you enabling weapons, this one will make you think about whether your engine is overheating or not. Basically, it’s a great pick for anyone who enjoys a grounded, more realistic game experience.
