“Tours of Duty is a new narrative campaign game mode for Star Wars: Legion that lets players build an army that is truly their own and create their own stories as they battle across the stars.

To start their Tours of Duty story, players build a Register of units which are used during their campaign. Players name their Register and can give names to each individual unit on it if they wish. As players progress through Tours of Duty, their units gain Experience, Veteran Ranks, and powerful Commendations. But if a unit is defeated in battle, there’s a chance they could suffer a Setback or become a Casualty!”

At it’s core, this is a way to start a new army and then develop it over time. It’s a campaign system where you start with your Paragon, a non-unique Commander, and build an Army around them. There is a level-up system that allows the Paragon and other units to gain more abilities and traits as well. These are call the Supply Points and you’ll spend them in a new Post-Game Sequence.

On top of this extra layer of special abilities, there are also new “Story Arcs” for players to use. These Arcs consist of three Agendas which are goals players are trying to accomplish in addition to their standard Battle Cards used in games. Once a player has completed two of the three Agendas, a new option unlocks. This is known as the Story Arc’s Turning Point Mission. This replaces the standard mission-building rules. Turning Point Missions add additional narrative to the game and sometimes contain non-standard scenarios to play out. These missions are designed to “evoke the same climactic experiences as Star Wars films and media” according to AMG.

Once you’ve completed the mission and finalized that particular Story Arc, you’re not done! You can choose a new one to start up and continue playing. Right now there’s an initial batch but more will become available in the future.

Star Wars: Legion -The Narrative Campaign

Now, if you’re a fan of a particular wargame involving hammers, then this probably sounds familiar to you. Personally, I find that these types of Narrative Campaigns work best with a group of like-minded players. After all, not everyone wants to show up to a pick-up game only to find out there’s a bunch of extra rules/systems involved when they were just looking for a chill, standard game.

That said, this does sound like a fun way to play. If you’ve got a league of Star Wars: Legion forming up (perhaps because of the new Starter Boxes coming) this could be a great way to dive in.

In the meantime, you’ll want to check out the rules for a full rundown of how these Tours of Duty actually work. The good news is that they are free to download!
