We’re solving high-tech problems with high-tech solutions and discovering virtual worlds with these tabletop RPGs.

We’re jumping back into the Grid with Tron in the theaters. Which of course means it’s time to jump into some virtual reality and high-tech adventures of our own with these tabletop RPGs!

Shadowrun: Virtual Realities

Virtual Realities, a Shadowrun sourcebook, is the ultimate guide to decking in the matrix. It includes new, revised, & expanded rules for matrix running, cyberdeck construction, & computer systems. Virtual Realities also features a full-color computer graphics section & a novella-length fiction piece, both set entirely in the matrix.

Shadowrun is a game that mixes a little of the fantasy genre in with high-tech cyberpunk tropes for an RPG that’s very unique and fun. And with the Virtual Realities sourcebook, you can take your characters into an entire virtual reality world.

Cyberpunk Red

Welcome to the Time of the Red, Choomba! The Megacorporations spent decades wrecking everything and in the aftermath of their last War, everyone has to fend for themselves. But that’s just fine. You can handle it. After all, in a world of vicious boostergangs, rampaging cyborgs, corporate assassins, and nihilistic doomsday cults, there’s only one rule: Always take it to the Edge. Take the big risks, get the big rewards. Be the action, start the rebellion, light the fire. Never drive slow when you can blaze a trail.

Of course, if you want a more straightforward cyberpunk experience, Cyberpunk Red is the TTRPG. This one isn’t strictly virtual reality based like The Grid in Tron, but if you’re looking for high-tech problems with high-tech solutions and the world of Cyberpunk offers a massive neon-lit playground.

Horizon: Virtual

Virtual lets players to take on the roles of sentient search engines, self-aware military AIs, and determined search-and-destroy virus hunters. Their young new world is a self-created, virtual reality of data towers and firewall defenses. They take on humanoid or animal forms, armor themselves with programs, and attack their enemies with hacks and viruses. They worship the Users as their gods and travel with the speed of thought.

In Virtual, you’ll play as a self-aware AI in a computerized world. Programs around you may go rogue, systems may become corrupt, and you’ll have to hunt viruses down.

Code Warriors

Code Warriors is a science-fiction tabletop roleplaying game where you portray programs living inside a computer world. The computer is crashing, perhaps for the last time. It’s the apocalypse. Can you survive? Can you stop the destruction of your home.

You’ll play a program that had a specific role in the previous world but who now has to find their way when all the old structures are gone. The stories you tell will center on survival, teamwork, the unknown, power and control, and rebuilding a new world in the ashes of the old.

Code Warriors may be the game most directly inspired by Tron. Players are programs in a programmed world that’s in the process of crashing. How do you survive a computerized apocalypse?

Numenera: Voices of the Datasphere

Most Ninth Worlders know the datasphere only as the source of mysterious glimmers—those odd, unbidden flashes of knowledge and insight that, rarely, embed themselves within the mind. Some who study the numenera call it a network built by the ancients to surround the world with their knowledge. Some Aeon Priests say it is in fact many such networks that sometimes, but not always, intersect.

And then there are those who have explored it. They tell stories of a vast metaspace that one can actually enter, to emerge in wholly other places—and along the way discover treasures and dangers unique to a bizarre realm unconstrained by the laws of nature.

There are layers to your virtual world and they need to be explored. Sages and adventurers will unlock the secrets of prior worlds. So will your character be one to find the knowledge and treasures that the Datasphere has to be discovered?
