Start Exploring With These Haunted House TTRPGs
We’re all getting trapped in and exploring our way out of a few spooky spaces with these haunted house TTRPGs.
The haunted house trope is one that I really enjoy exploring in media and in RPGs. Finding your way into a place that you think will be run-of-the-mill spooky, but then you’re trapped you there and turns out that this place is actually absolutely terrifying. So now you need to get to the bottom of what’s happening and why before you can escape. And it doesn’t even have to be a “house” per say. Some of these RPGs will bring you to places that aren’t houses, but they are haunted. And you may live there for the rest of your life if you can’t escape.
Death House
This is just a PDF! You don’t need to buy anything! Death House is a sequel game to Curse of Strahd that takes place in the spooky Durst Manor in Barovia. The owners of the house regarded Strahd as a god and built a dungeon under their house for cult gatherings. Everything will be fine, but maybe don’t tell your players that this is the ‘death house’ because they may not want to enter.
This Discord Has Ghosts in It
This is a neat take on the haunted house genre, only the house that you’re haunting is a Discord chat. Physical rooms are represented by different chat rooms where ghosts can type and investigators can only use voice-chat. Investigators explore the house, try to interact with the ghosts, and discover the secrets of the house and its inhabitants.
Green Dawn Mall
In Green Dawn Mall, you and between two and four friends wander into a mall and find that it’s endless, distorted, and nigh inescapable. But you have to keep exploring because you’re looking for a lost friend. As you get farther in, it gets harder and harder to find your way back to the real world, and what you’ll see in the mall gets weirder and weirder.
Public Access
Using the Brindlewood Bay system, Public Access is a game that follows the Deep Lake Latchkeys as they investigate strange happenings around Deep Lake, NM. There are eight mysteries in all, taking place on a block where people have vanished without a trace, or in abandoned theme park, as well as other potentially creepy locations. Each story will play like it’s own haunted-house-style adventure as you explore the various settings and see what mysteries they hold.
The Darkest House
Finally, a classic Haunted House! Crumbling walls, whispers in the dark, and a big, empty house full of rumors and stories of missing people. Made to be integrated into whatever campaign or game system you’re playing right now, The Darkest House is a chilling RPG. Plus, it’s compatible with many virtual tabletops, meaning that you’ll get all of the artwork and maps that you could want.
