Whether we’re playing as the monsters, or just supporting them implicitly, these board games will let you play on the monster’s side.

Some people like the monsters a little too much. Either they’re low-key on the monster’s side, they want to keep a few of the smaller ones as pets, or the just think they can ‘fix him,’ sometimes there’s just somebody who’s a bit too into whatever wants to kill your party. But with these board games, you can just fully commit to the monster-supporting side. Whether you want to play as the monster, raise one as a pet, or just see them thrive, these board games are openly pro-monster.

King of Tokyo

King of Tokyo is one of those games that everyone should have on their shelf. Games are short, easy to teach and learn, and everyone has fun playing. The concept is simple, you are one of up-to-six monsters attempting to take over Tokyo. It’s also a game that is both not-very-serious and highly-competitive. Will you rampage to victory, or try to play the long game and keep your monster healthy until they’re the only one standing?

I’ve owned King of Tokyo for years and years at this point. And so, so many friends whom I’ve introduced to it have added it to their own game collection.

Boss Monster

In Boss Monster, you’re the boss monster. Build your dungeon, lure in adventurers, and destroy them! You need to build your dungeon to be as enticing and dangerous as possible, or the adventurers won’t want to visit or will easily escape with their lives and your loot. But if you find that sweet spot, you’ll collect so many would-be heroes!

Dungeon Petz

There’s at least one person in your party who always wants to make a pet of whatever dangerous looking creature the DM throws at you. I have been that player more than once. And Dungeon Petz lets you not only keep all of the most horrible monsters at pets, but run an entire pet store for them! The dungeon lords need new pets, and you have their perfect new best friend.

Keep the Heroes Out!

Keep the Heroes Out is a cooperative strategy game where you build decks, summon monsters, craft weapons, and train your pets to fend out the terrible intruders. The heroes want to kill your monster friends and steal your treasure, but it’s not going to happen on your watch!

Cthulhu Wars

If you want a physically large and imposing game where the stakes are also world-ending high, this is it. Cthulhu Wars is a strategy board game where players play as the Great Old Ones, cultists, monsters, or aliens, from Lovecraft mythos and see who will succeed in destroying the world and rule the ruins. The game and all of its pieces are physically large, games take more than an hour to play, but the rules are surprisingly easy to learn. So you’ll be destroying reality in no time.
