Age of Sigmar: ‘Blighted Wilds’ Adds Custom Terrain Building Options
Age of Sigmar – Path to Glory: Blighted Wilds is adding a new way to customize your army. Now you can build your own monuments and terrain!
Games Workshop has taken the Anvil of Apotheosis concept (the idea of creating your own hero from a set of options) and applied it to terrain. Now, players can really stretch those hobby skills and have it apply to a piece of terrain for your army. It’s time to raid the bits box…
“Along with the usual additions of thematic battleplans, Paths, and enhancements, the upcoming Path to Glory supplement Blighted Wilds will enable you to erect your own Landmark of Ghyran – a mystical monument, floating metalith, or ironclad bastion that supports nearby units with special abilities of your choosing.”
Build Your Own Landmark of Ghyran
In the above example terrain, the Warhammer Studio took bits from the Nexus Chaotica and Feculent Gnarlmaw (and also other random bits) to create a Nurgle-themed altar. But this isn’t just an excuse to do some awesome kitbashing. There are now rules added in the Path to Glory supplement to customize this feature further.
“Setting your destiny point limit gives you the terrain’s general size and points cost when used in games, and you then select from a wide range of abilities that can drastically change how the terrain piece functions.”
Now, before you go too crazy for your next hobby project, just note there are some limits here. In the example above they opted to make this terrain start from a base option that costs 20 Destiny Points to build. It also costs 70 points include in your army as well. So remember that they aren’t “free” options to go nuts with here. It also costs more Destiny Points to add features like the examples below:
These are just a few of the many options you’ll have access to. And yes, these rules will be useful for all the armies in the game and not just Nurgle’s followers.
Custom Regiments of Renown
Oh, and there’s one last thing to check out as part of customizing your army with the Blighted Wilds rules: Custom Regiments of Renown.
“The tinkering doesn’t stop at terrain features, either, as Blighted Wilds also lets you create entire custom, personalised Regiments of Renown to augment your forces. By using generalised profiles for different kinds of infantry, cavalry, and support units, and simplified custom heroes to lead your regiment, you can really let your imagination run wild and envision companies of warriors never before seen in the ranks of your faction.”
Soooo this is both exciting and worrying at the same time. The ability to really build your own Regiment of Renown using a set list of options could be really awesome — especially for the hobby options. However, I’m really concerned about what exactly those options are. This could really veer too far in the “Busted and Over Powered” direction or in the “watered down and bland” direction. It’s a balancing act that could be extremely difficult to pull off.
If these unit options end up being too good then why wouldn’t you just run them in place of your chosen army? But if they are too generic and bland, what’s the point in even taking them in the first place? I’m worried about this section. However this is also just for Path to Glory so I don’t think you’re going to see this stuff filter into Match Play. Hopefully, the Narrative Players out there will keep the spirit of these rules in mind and have some fun armies and stories to tell without making it really unfun for their opponents.
What do you think of these Custom Terrain options?
