D&D: Five Magic Items Worth Passing Around

Some magic items are meant to be shared with the party, believe it or not. Here are five magic items at their best when they’re shared!

Magic items are a great reward for risking your life in a dismal, dark dungeon deep down, where it’s dark and full of monsters. They’re shiny. Sometimes even literally so. And they do all sorts of things. So it stands to reason you might want to hoard them like a dragon.

But some magic items are better when you horde them like a bunch of kobolds. That is to say, you share them around so they’re ubiquitous. Sometimes you just gotta spread the love – as long as you keep track of which party member is holding onto it, so you know where the love is at all times.

Bag of Holding

First and foremost, the ultimate party item: a bag of holding. These bags are an iconic D&D magic item for a reason – they let you hold enough useful items for a whole adventure, and still have enough room to loot everything that isn’t nailed down. A bag of holding is how you take it with you.

That way, you don’t have to worry about the practicality of “Who’s carrying the casks of alchemist’s fire?” or “How are you carrying twenty barrels of runepowder?” you just have ’em in the bag and take ’em out when you need to.

Sentinel Shield

This humble shield is a boon to many a party. Sure, not every character can wield a shield. But you don’t have to wield this one to gain its benefits. All you have to do is carry it. No attunement, even. And holding it gives you Advantage on Perception checks.

Which makes this a perfect item to pass around whenever the party is sending someone up to scout ahead. Or if you’re all searching for a secret door and no one can find it, this shield can give you the perfect opportunity to beat the odds, no matter what you’re looking for.

Alchemy Jug

Passing the jug around the campfire is a tried and true trope. And when that jug is a magical Alchemy Jug, it’s even better. Because within the confines of this vessel are potent liquids of many kinds. It’s one of those items that is only just okay until it really comes in handy.

But by passing it around, you can give everyone beer or mayonnaise, or if you’re in combat, you can pour out poison or acid or other liquids, wherever they may be most needed on the battlefield.

Wand Of Magic Missiles

Magic Wands are a common enough magic item. But the Wand of Magic Missile is a category unto itself. Because almost every single magic wand in D&D requires attunement from a spellcaster in order to be able to cast whatever spells it contains. Not the Wand of Magic Missile.

This magic wand doesn’t even take attunement at all. So you can toss it from party member to party member, making it easy for anyone to have a magic ranged attack that can always hit and target multiple opponents. Magic missile is such a great spell on its own, but this wand making it so that anyone, anywhere, at any time can use it (so long as you have enough charges) makes it an indispensable item.

Ring of Water Walking

You might not want to wlk on every body of water you come across, though.

The ring of water walking is an easy enough magic item to parse out. Sure, maybe not everyone has one, but all you have to do is wear it (again, no attunement required) and you can cast Water Walking. Even if your DM is a stickler for interpreting it as “the water walking spell only lasts while you wear the ring” you can still just pass it around to make sure you go across the river. Or lake. Or whatever other body of water is in your way.
