Goatboy’s Grimdark Armylist – The Biggest Subterranean Tyranids
Goatboy here to look at this crazy big bug list using the Tyranid Subterranean Assault Detachment to bring some fun to the 40K tabletop.
The other week I played 2 games at a local RTT. I wanted to get some testing with this pile of World Eaters that went hard on 2 max sized units of Eightbound w/Slaughterbound and a maxed unit of Exalted Eightbound w/Slaughterbound. I had two fun games and I won’t talk about the WE list and instead I want y’all to look at this crazy big bug Tyranid list using the Subterranean Assault Detachment to bring some fun to the table top.
The list was run by Vys a local player who is pretty dang cool. He is a super chill dude, brings a good competitive game to the table top, and is a dream to play. I haven’t had a chance to play him yet and it was great to see his name pop up as my round 1 opponent. Let’s look at his list that he took from another player online.

Biggest Subterranean Tyranids Tactics
The Subterranean Assault detachment rule allows your Burrowing units to come up and create a token that you can then deploy other things from it. You also have some fun stratagems that let you move your monsters around and create some really difficult decisions for your opponent. I think I only won this game because he failed a 6 inch charge (one of the detachment rules lets you deploy from one of these tokens within 6″ of the enemy if you deploy within 9″ of the token). The detachment also lets you reroll hit rolls of 1 which is great for a lot of these monsters that hit on a 2+ in this list. You also get to make up to two Trygon characters which helps you get some enhancements in this army.
As you can see from this list the 3 Norns pick objectives and become big pains in the butt. He picked 2 of the expansion objectives and then had one Norn pick my home objective as his special place. That was the one that missed the charge but you can see how this guy shows up, charges your home objective, and then makes you have to come back to deal with it or just ignore it. This kills some of your secondary plays as well which just seems like a rough go for an army to try and win thru.
The three Tyrannofexes continue the beef and all the other options try to push some scoring ability with cheap units. I love the idea of the list and even went out and bought a Norn Emissary to try and do a paint test on to see if I want to try out this list. It just feels like a lot of fun and gives you a lot of play to try out as you deploy your monsters all around the table top.
