Marvel: Crisis Protocol – Gambit Is Joining Marvel Rivals
Gambit is joining Marvel Rivals and now I need to bust him back out on the tabletop in Marvel: Crisis Protocol!
This is just a friendly reminder of two things for all you X-Men fans out there. First off, as the title is implying, Gambit is joining Marvel Rivals for Season 5. And while I was a little shocked to learn he’s going to be a strategist and not a duelist, I think that his in-game kit actually does a great job of showcasing his powerset from the comics.
I’m actually really excited to give Gambit a run in Rivals. It’s always good to know how to play a support and having Gambit in your back pocket feels like an Ace up your sleeve. But what does this have to do with Marvel: Crisis Protocol? Great question. That brings me to the second thing I wanted to remind everyone about: Gambit got a new character card update back in May 2025. And he’s pretty darn good still!
Gambit Update 2025
So first, let’s see his old cards for comparison sake:
Overall, his abilities and card weren’t terrible for the time when he came out. He had some nice ways to boost his damage and could basically ensure he’d get a wild on attacks — if you got a hit and had the power. That would then trigger some other effects, too. That said, he wasn’t seen as that impressive overall — especially as a threat 3 character in the X-Men roster. But that was his first iteration. They May 2025 update reworked somethings and juiced-up this lovable Cajun!
At first glance it looks like his attacks lost some power. However, keep reading. Gambits new ability The Cards Always Be In My Favor makes ALL wilds (for attacking, defending, or dodging) count as 2 successes now. Plus he can still convert a hit to a wild for 1 energy once per attack. Gambit did lose the Accelerate Charge but I think the new power brings the floor up for basically all of his attacks across the board — and you don’t have to pay for it. So it’s an exchange of potential spike damage for more consistent damage.
On top of that change to his offensive power, his defenses also gain that benefit, too. I think this makes Gambit a more well rounded character on the tabletop.
Oh and Rogue is on the way, too…but we don’t have confirmation from the developers as to what she’s going to do …yet.
Anyhow, with Gambit on deck in Rivals and the update/changes from May, I really need to work him into my X-Men roster again. Or, now that I think about it, he is a part of the Brotherhood of Mutants. And also available in the Servants of Apocalypse…
Now THAT could be a fun list to incorporate him in…
