Marvel: Crisis Protocol – Now I Want More Sentinel Terrain
I guess it’s time to buy some more Sentinel Prime MK IV kits and start kitbashing. How did Atomic Mass Games build this terrain?
If the folks at Atomic Mass Games are reading this then I have a request: We need a tutorial on how you built those destroyed Sentinel Terrain pieces! Which ones am I talking about? The ones from their Mutant Extinction Video:
If you haven’t seen the video, just watch it. There’s some awesome looking shots of the miniatures but there’s also some amazing custom terrain pieces for this one. I screenshotted the ones I could.
As far as I can tell, AMG made 3 of these destroyed Sentinel terrain features. Now, I know a thing or two about these kits. I’ve got too many in my collection to field in a legal roster… but that’s not the point. Instead I wanted to look close at what base kits were needed for each one of these sets and go from there. First up, the BIG one.
Crashed Sentinel In A Building
We get a couple of wide shots of this terrain feature and we can see that it’s a Sentinel Prime MK IV kit plus an apartment building from the NYC Apartment kit.
We can also tell that this Sentinel is crashed into the side of the building with the stairs. And how do I know that’s a Sentinel Prime and not just a regular Sentinel MK IV? Well, only the Prime kit comes with the damaged bits. If you look at the chest, you can see the damage matches pretty well. You can see it in the assembly guide:
Now, as far as how AMG made this terrain, that’s really just good hobby skills. Not only did they cut a massive hole in the wall for the apartment kit, they also build in the floors/doors to the apartment AND then cut up the Sentinel to position it there. There’s likely a good bit of plasti-card and foam as well as basing material. Note the bricks that were also added to really round this out.
Dumpster Sentinel
This terrain feature is another great example of using what you have on hand. So this one could be a regular Sentinel MK IV and not a Prime. Why do I think that? Well, they are slightly smaller and the damage on this one looks customized quite a bit. This is an excellent example of battle damage, too. The top of the helmet is caved in, the legs have been expertly cut off at the knees and remodeled, and the arms have been repositioned with slight damage, too.
The rest of the terrain kits are just a dumpster and trash cans, plus an assortment of bottles and cups that you’ll find with the base sprues. I also think there might have been a custom plasti-card cutout on the bottom added for stability and as a footprint to attach everything to. I’m curious to know if they just bent the plastic top of the dumpster manually or with some heat to get it to deform like that. This is a really cool custom terrain feature!
Car Wreck Sentinel
This destroyed Sentinel might be the simplest design wise but that doesn’t mean a lot of work didn’t go into this one. First off, they had to cut the legs/feet into position. And the torso also has a lot of custom battle damage, too. It sure looks like Wolverine got a hold of this one! The chest also has a bunch of hobby work done to cut that out and show some exposed innards. It’s missing an arm and it’s had it’s head and other arm repositioned, too.
The Car is just from one of the many car terrain pieces but it’s gotten it’s roof caved in. Also, they cleverly used some of the Sentinel’s own base topper with this kit. Again, this might be the most “simple” build but it looks fantastic. I also believe the Sentinel here is another regular Sentinel and not a Prime. That’s because of the overall size of this one.
Again, AMG, if you’re reading this, we need a tutorial on how these were made! If you’ve got some left over Sentinel bits, they make for great scatter terrain. I’ve been working on a set using extra bases to be used instead of street lights or traffic lights. It’s a fun little hobby project for sure!
