Free League and Two Little Mice’s Twilight Sword (now on BackerKit) might be the closest we ever get to an official Zelda tabletop RPG.

The Legend of Zelda series has captured the heart containers of generations of gamers. And yet, there’s never actually been an official Zelda tabletop RPG. Likely because it would be difficult to license, especially since I’m certain there are probably restrictions on what you can and can’t do with Link. Plus who would you get to make it, and what would the system actually look like?

Although these last couple of questions have been answered. Because developers Two Little Mice and publisher Free League are hard at work on Twilight Sword, a Zelda-inspired tabletop RPG that also draws on games like Final Fantasy and Ni No Kuni. You’ll be a hero out to free the world of Radia from Despair and bring back Hope!

Twilight Sword – Now On BackerKit

At first glance, Twilight Sword confirms something we all may have known deep in our bones but never voiced. You can communicate the idea of “a Zelda” by just featuring twinks with swords prominently in your artwork. Plus a lot of greenery and some dynamic looking poses with heroes that feel a little bit more cutesy than your typical “cool” fantasy art.

But then, when you look even deeper, you can see the inspirations that this RPG wears right there on its tunic and emblazoned on its shield.

The one thing that isn’t immediately obvious is the underlying system. The game mechanics are unique, developed specifically for this game, using a system called Created at Twilight (CAT). It’s d12-based, so you’ll tackle all of your problems by rolling a d12, trying to roll under one of your eight abilities. Simple, but then around that are built even more mechanics, and here’s where they really get nerdy about the inspirations.

Take the elemental system, where there’s a network of 8 elements, which all sort of Pokemon together in interesting ways. Fire beats Ice, but Ice beats Wind, while Thunder beats Water and Darkness beats Light. You know, the good JRPG type mechanics. You can take a look at a preview of the game right here.

“Become a Champion and bring Hope back to the lands of Radia! Twilight Sword is an adventure role-playing game inspired by classic video-games like The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, Ni No Kuni, and Studio Ghibli.

Do you remember? This used to be a beautiful land. But as foretold, the scourge Vardas has returned and filled the world with ruin and despair. Nowt he fate of Radia rests with you. Wake up, Champion. Challenge the forces of Evil, and claim the Twilight Sword!”

As you might expect, the crowdfunding campaign is already going like gangbusters. It’s surpassed more than $450,000 in its first day, and there are still 23 days left to go. That means more stretch goals and exclusives to get your hands on. You can check out the whole campaign at the link below!
