Goatboy here, and we need to  talk about how there are too many dang Ultramarine characters in 40K right now, with more on the way!

Goatboy here and the hot mess for today is the newest mess GW has made.  Today I want to talk about how there are too many dang Ultramarine characters right now.  Heck there are two many Ultramarine Characters that are the same character but different sets of rules.  This is a bit of a mess and while I expect some of them to get legend’ed there is a bit of a problem when say a player uses the newer model to represent the better old one.

Many Marneus Calgars

Let’s look at the at the current poster child for the Ultramarine – Mr. Marneus Calgar.  He has two different versions with obviously two different design philosophies for them.  The first one – the Marneus Gravgar (thanks Mr. Lennon) has been constantly tweaked this entire edition.  His point level has been raised, dropped, and aggressively pushed that when you compare the old one to the new one there is almost no reason to take the shiny new Marneus Terminator Daddy or M Taddy for short.  He just costs too much for less attacks, wounds, and presence in a unit.

Which is just weird and annoying if you ask me.  It feels like the old one needs a nice rules reshuffle to really split the difference on the two models.  I also feel like Mr. Gravgar needs to get a points increase as he just seems too good to not take – especially with all the new Victrix nonsense you can pull right now.  Just you wait and see when those guys start to hit the table top and you see 2 units reactive move then blood surge into you.

A Brace of Catos

While Calgar is a pain, the bigger issue is what to do with ole Mr. Cato.  Right now the App has 2 different versions with Captain Sicarius and Cato Sicarius to his knitting group.  The new Cato Sicarius loses his Captain name and gets a bright and shiny figure that is not nearly as aggressively costed as his ole Captain one.  He also shifts his rules a bit and his point costs as well.

The original captain Cato gives his unit he joins Scout and assault weapons.  He still has the Reactive move as well and a less impressive set of melee attacks.  He also ends up being a heck of a lot cheaper as well which is another issue.  The ability to Scout up some Victrix Guard is what he will be used for and I am sure you will see his new model get his Captain name back and a discounted points cost.

His new model also still has the Reactive move which is good – but he loses scout and gains more points.  While his close combat attacks are better he isn’t being added to a unit to fight better.  It’s weird to see the new model and the old model in the app still and I wonder if that just ends up being a mistake.  Will have to wait and see as the game moves on and players figure out a way to make a ton of cool look Victrix Guard conversions.

More Ultra Coming in the 500 Worlds

While we are looking at Ultramarines – and understanding more nonsense is coming with this 500 world thing – why did a Black Library character get competitive rules but all the other ones did not?  I am talking about good ole Uriel Ventris and his ability to let Victrix Guard deep strike and give the army a little bit of Vect action for their games.  Are you starting to see a pattern of a list that basically uses 3 super friends and Roboute to shove around those Victrix and just be a pain in the butt?

Will we see Lieutenant Titus stay in the army with Captain Titus?  Is this some sort of time warp like the X-Men like to do and have young Cyclops hang out with Old Cyclops?  Or is this like a 12 Monkeys thing?
