Captain Demetrian Titus is once again the Captain of the Second Company of Ultramarines. That’s a BIG deal for the 40k universe.

In case you missed the news, Captain Titus is back and in charge of the Second Company. He’s got a big job ahead of him: Retake the 500 Worlds of Ultramar. At least he got a cool intro movie because of it.

“The Imperium is under siege. Times are so dire that even Ultramar is hard pressed, and with Roboute Guilliman busy overseeing the Indomitus Crusade, the defence of the Five Hundred Worlds falls to its people. While others push out to reclaim its lost borders, one illustrious captain is tasked with securing its critical interior, a task made ever more difficult when a terrifying spectre of the lost Necron empire returns to plague the galaxy.”

The Master of the Watch

Captain Titus is the Playable Character in both Space Marine and Space Marine 2. At least for the campaigns. So, as the player insert character, it’s neat that we’re seeing him show up again in universe and on the tabletop (again).

Now, if you need a lore refresher, GW has you covered. It’s a quick run down (with a few spoilers) that explains just how Titus became the Captain of the Second Company again. Like most Marines that get the job of Captain, it’s because his predecessor had to be replaced. You can fill in the blank as to what that implies.

That said, he’s not doing the job of reclaiming the 500 Worlds alone. He’s got a few friends to back him up. And, to be fair, he’s going to need all the help he can get.

New Narrative Push For 40k

This is a big deal for the narrative side of things in the 40k universe. It’s giving us a bit of a focal point for the story — at least for a few months. What I’m not sure of is if this is like the end of other editions and this will be a series or just a stand alone. This feels like an capstone on the current edition. It certainly tied into several other product lines. The video game for one. But also Kill Team’s story intersects with this campaign very directly. We know that because of the Nightbringer “reveal” for Kill Team.

Whatever happens this certainly feels like GW is setting up a showdown between the Ultramarines and the Nightbringer (as well as all the other Necrons involved). It’s absolutely going to be a throwdown of epic proportions. What I’m curious about is if these two forces are about to get “third-partied” during this fight. Let’s not forget that the Tyranids are very active in the sector. And so were the Thousand Sons!

If you played Space Marine 2, then you know what I’m talking about. The point being there’s more than just the Ultramarines and the Necrons around. It’s a nice volatile concoction of factors at play in the 500 Worlds. That’s what’s making me curious to see what else GW has planned.

Also, I’m not even sure I’d call this a “new” narrative push really. This feels like yet another front that’s been opened up in on the galactic map. Yet another campaign area has been activated. I’m not even sure if we’ll get a resolution to this one (or really any of the previous ones, either). Did we ever get a resolution to the whole Nachmund Gauntlet? Or did that battle just shift around to the other end of the pass?

ANYHOW, I am looking forward to the new miniatures. Even though I’m not an Ultramarine player, I kind of want to get a set just to have and paint. Captain Titus is a hero of the Imperium that anyone can play as in the game. I’m excited to see what GW has planned for him next.

Retake the 500 worlds? Sounds like an RTS game setting in the making…
